Steve stares.
Rubs his fists into his eyes, smacks his palms against his own cheeks, blinks.
And Eddie is still there, very much not dead. Very alive looking for someone who Steve had dragged out of the Upside Down only to have bleed out in his arms before the ambulance could get there.
“Hiya, Harrington,” Eddie greets, smiling widely. “Gonna invite me in?”

Or, Eddie survived and Steve definitely doesn't have any repressed feelings (and a goddamn well of survivors guilt) for him, nope, no he does not. If only Eddie would just leave him alone to sort those totally non-existent repressed feelings in peace, but he's fucking everywhere.

Summary
Steve’s on his knees in his own goddamn living room, the cold metal of a gun rattling against the back of his skull, held unsteady but firm in Carver’s shaking hand.
Eddie is in front of them, back to the front door, eyes big and wide in his pale face.
He’s got a hand held out, placating and wobbly, and Steve grits his teeth against the helplessness burning through his veins. Blood oozes into his eye from the gash in his eyebrow and he blinks through it, trying to will the fuzziness out of his vision so he can focus on Eddie, on the terror in his face. Fucking Carver.
“Jason,” Eddie starts, voice trembling through the word. “Please, man, just let me explain–”
“Shut the fuck up, freak!” Carver snarls.

But he didn’t have to know what to say, because a moment later Eddie was hugging him tightly, clutching at him, desperately gripping the back of his jacket and pulling him so close Steve could feel his heartbeat against his own chest. Steve hugged him back, shushing him softly without thinking as he wrapped his arms around him and felt him fall against him.
The others watched in confusion, and Steve looked away from Robin’s wide eyes, closing his eyes and burying his face in Eddie’s neck, allowing himself the relief that the sound of Eddie’s crying brought. Eddie was trembling, shaking like a leaf in the wind, and Steve ached.

He opens his mouth. His teeth are clacking together.
He manages to temper the feeling right at the brink so that all he says is, “D-don’t you assholes have a bed time?”
“Oh, that’s cute,” Dustin says, over the sound of Max scoffing.
Please go, just fucking go, I’m gonna fall apart and I don’t want you to see it, not again.
“Yeah, well I have a bedtime, so let’s get outta here, dickheads,” Steve says.
He sounds dry, borderline snippy. But his eyes fleetingly meet Eddie’s as he speaks, like he’s heard him somehow. Like he understands.

Steve’s curiosity makes him turn faster than he can even think.
“Get you out of what— oh.”
Handcuffs.
Eddie’s not just standing naked at the kitchen bar, he’s handcuffed to it.
Or, Steve interrupts Eddie’s hookup and comforts him through a subdrop after. That's how it starts.

Summary
Eddie’s eyes flicker from their connected hands to Steve’s face, still looking down, and back again before Steve responds.
“Coming here to hang out with you and eat pie filling is all that got me through the day. Being here helps. You help.”
When Eddie was younger, Wayne used to call him a great little helper when he’d fix something around their trailer, or hold the flashlight just right beneath the hood of a car Wayne was fixing for a neighbor. He’d done something concrete, done a task, and felt helpful. But sitting here in the diner with Steve’s fingers wrapped around his own, nothing he’s done is a tangible help. All he’s done is exist in the same space with Steve and Eddie’s never felt like his presence is soothing. Always too much, too big, too loud.
He doesn’t know what to do with Steve wanting to be with him, or with their hands clasped together, so he just stays the course.
“Well, shit. Good. That’s, yeah. That’s good to know. Ready to test some cherries?”
Or, Eddie's an amateur baker who desperately needs a healthy dose of hope. He finds it in the bottom of a pie dish and the hands of Steve Harrington.

But one morning-after breakfast, followed by one joyfully-offered-then-gut-wrenchingly-lost number, followed again by one uncanny second chance to connect, leaves Eddie less clueless about who his prefect husband is, than about how the hell a middle class fuck from Podunk, Nowhere could possibly deserve his time. Let alone keep him.
Lucky for Eddie, there’s no version of Steve Harrington who doesn’t deal in grand gestures (and loves with everything he’s got).
