After Lestrade had delivered his heartfelt speech at the conclusion of The Six Napoleons, Holmes thanked him, at first perfunctorily and then again, a few moments later in a low voice, with feeling. I could see that the first response was automatic, that my friend had done the thing which he had trained himself to do, although his humility and his awkwardness made accepting thanks and praise something he had to work at. From his second response, I could see the depths of his respect for Lestrade, and his cheeks pinked a little as they rounded, dimpling with his smile at his acknowledgement of Lestrade's regard.
