Stede’s gentle cooing heats a delicate flush in Ed’s cheeks, a coy timidity, as if this hadn’t been the whole fucking point. Ed peeks cautiously into their bedroom, just enough to catch sight of Stede setting down his book and his reading glasses, hands folded patiently in his lap as he smiles over at the slither-sight of Ed that he glimpses hiding just beyond the door.
The outline of one floppy grey ear, maybe.

Before bed, Stede has a Routine: shower, dry his hair, face wash, a layer of moisturiser, the anti-aging cream that Ed always tells him he hopes doesn't work because he likes Stede aging, actually, and then he goes to the loo before putting on his pyjamas.
It's only after he flushes that he realises his mistake.
Ed is displeased.
Or, well. Ed claims to be displeased.
“You know I’m going to have to punish you for that in the morning, pet,” he says, with barely contained glee.
