The acceleration of a chemical reaction by a catalyst. As a man of science, Jonathan Reid is very familiar with the concept. He still doesn't see it coming.
When Elisabeth Ashbury decides to host this 'small thing' to welcome a 'dear old friend of hers' to London, Jonathan attends the event with Geoffrey McCullum as his companion, which is nowhere near the most absurd thing to come out of the whole event. Then, when Elisabeth's dear old friend turns out not to be as harmless as expected, Jonathan finds himself having to deal with feelings he might or might not have been ignoring for a while and Geoffrey? He has no option but to come along for the ride (pun intended).

Summary
How could he have won against someone so efficient in taking down vampires and so determined to kill him, when all Jonathan had wanted had been to find a way to cooperate with the hunter? For most of the fight he had pulled his punches and by the time he’d realized he couldn’t afford to, it had been too late.
Or: Reid loses the fight, but McCullum doesn’t kill him – otherwise this story would just be a death screen

Summary
The primary emotion that Jonathan felt was panic. McCullum had told him about his own uncanny alter ego: the confrontation, the futile attempts to convince his guard that he, McCullum, was their true leader, and not the impostor. Despite that, Jonathan hadn’t spared a thought to the idea that the Cain to his own Abel could be running about London, let alone that he could be full of murderous, horrifying power.
-Jonathan Reid is a scientist; he doesn't believe in magic. But he can find no rational explanation for the fact that after his battle with Doris Fletcher, he has found himself in an alternate world he barely recognizes: one where his mother is dead, and a monstrous, sadistic vampire has ripped apart the fragile life he has built since his transformation. Worse, the monster in question happens to be a looking-glass version of himself who has fully embraced his evil side. Jonathan's only way out is to join with Geoffrey McCullum, but even if he can talk the vampire hunter into working with him, defeating this crueler, more powerful version of himself might still prove impossible.

When Jonathan finds a stray dog injured from a skal attack, he didn't expected to become so attached to it. Nursing it back to health, he's determined to find the unlucky pup's owner or a good home while slowly falling in love with it's endearing personality and playful demeanor.
OR
(Geoffrey has the misfortune of being rescued by none other than the Leech Doctor and is forced to keep up the ruse lest his secret be revealed to not only Jonathan but also Swansea. Never before had he considered being a lapdog as the lap of luxury but the extra bit of attention while he recovers didn't feel so bad.)
