“Do you think we still would’ve become friends even if it weren’t for the whole penpal thing?”
“...We don’t live in the same country,” Euijoo replies, after a while.
“Well, obviously.” Yixiang rolls his eyes. “I meant like, imagine we did, and we spoke the same language, and we were classmates our whole lives. Don’t you think we still would’ve been friends?”
or: Eleven years worth of letters and messages and calls, and now this— Yixiang and Euijoo, in the flesh.

Summary
"Well, you couldn’t script it, could you? Best mates as kids, apparently, and proper rivals now—and the big question, really, is whether they can let it go now that it’s come to it, or if old grudges really do die hard…”
(The soccer/football fic in which the tension is built less from actual rivalry and more from a complicated shared past. And wanting each other's bodies, obviously.)

Summary
“Do I talk in my sleep?” Nico asks Euijoo one day.
Euijoo purses her lips, considering this for a moment. “No, I don’t think so,” she says. “At least, I’ve never heard you saying anything. Why do you ask?”
“Just curious,” Nico says lightly.
She has to check, just to make sure. She’s worked so hard to keep her secret from Euijoo so far and doesn’t want to ruin it with something stupid like that. Living so close to her feels dangerous. Makes it worse, like there’s no room behind her ribcage for anything else besides her heart.
[In which Nico has always been in love.]

Summary
Euijoo likes guys who are gentle, thoughtful, maybe a little awkward. Someone whose presence feels like a promise—not a gamble.
Nicholas is a gamble. The kind of guy you only bet on if you’re already losing, already a little drunk, already convincing yourself you’ve got no peace left to protect.
“You think I’m gonna forgive you because you’re good at sucking dick?”
Nicholas grins, pupils blown wide. “I was kinda hoping, yeah."

Summary
In the wake of being asked to give a speech at Euijoo’s wedding, who Nicholas hasn’t seen in three years, he’s pulled into all of the memories that have brought them this far– their awkward first encounter in high school, their charged university years– and everything that follows.

Summary
On his 22nd birthday, Euijoo starts hearing Nicholas' thoughts in his head. Well, hearing is a strong word. But Nico's thoughts are in his head, and it's both a blessing and a curse (literally).
It's also, most definitely, a journey.

Summary
Rigging hotel bedroom assignments is an art. It requires just the right amount of begging and bribery, two things Nicholas is pretty good at.
Any act of self-flagellation is worth it, ultimately, as long as he gets to wake up to this: Euijoo, warm and pliant and sweet as Nicholas kisses his thighs, rubbing his cheek over the softness of them. He hates mornings, but he loves Euijoo. And as long as he wakes up early enough, this is as much alone time as they can get. So he’ll set aside any grumpiness if it means having Euijoo to himself for a while.

or: the one where Nicholas indulges a little bit in the early hours of the morning. -

“When I come back?” he echoes, as if to make sure he heard right.
“Yeah,” Nicholas’ lips curve, though his expression doesn’t quite reach a smile. “But don’t make me wait too long, okay?”
Right before enlistment, Euijoo and Nicholas fuck things up. It takes them four years to finally make it right.

Summary
“Do you think I would look good with nipple piercings?” Nico asks, staring appraisingly at herself in Euijoo’s long mirror.
Nico pulls her oversized shirt back to be tight against her chest, and because she never wears a bra, her small breasts are prominently outlined, nipples crested against the fabric. Euijoo glances down for a second before trailing her gaze back up to meet Nico’s eyes in the mirror.
“What made you think of that?” Euijoo swallows.
“I’ve been thinking about doing it for a while,” Nico explains, “But seeing Joohee’s piercing reminded me.”
The piercing would suit Nico, and Nico knows it.
“Yeah, you could pull it off.”
Or: Euijoo has been in Nico's orbit for as long as she can remember.

Summary
The first time EJ sees him, it’s on the beach, and he is drowning, thrashing in the dark water, the sand long gone grey under the moonlight.
By the time EJ pulls the boy out, his clothes are soggy and his eyes are raw with an emotion that can’t or won’t find its way out through his lips, so has found another escape. He doesn’t meet EJ with an apology, or a thank you, or even his name. Instead, he just scowls, his lungs wheezing with something that sounds frightening, and shoves EJ back. This time, at least, he stomps away from the sea, not towards it.
EJ, butt sore on the clumpy sand, watches him go.
Much, much later, EJ will regret this moment. Will regret even more how, even though Nico was the one with saltwater in his lungs, saving him doomed EJ to drown instead.
Nico and EJ spend a summer pouring salt into open wounds and watching them heal anyway.

Summary
“Why did you?” It jumped out before Euijoo could catch it.
Nicholas smiled. “I thought you said no more questions.”
Euijoo opened his mouth, then closed it. He had nothing that sounded smart.
“Time for you to go,” Nicholas said, walking him to the door. “I have already done more talking than I like in the morning.”
Euijoo stepped to the threshold and did not cross it. The usual gnawing in his gut had gone quiet for a second, like a radio with the volume turned down. He was not ready to dial it back up. “Dinner tonight?”
Nicholas nodded. “Dinner tonight.”

Summary
They’d had enough conversations about reading people’s opinions on social media. Enough arguments. Platforms of people freely sharing their—frequently unfounded—judgements; definitely not beneficial to any of their psyches back during I-Land, &Audition, debut…any of it, really. And yet. Euijoo can’t resist a scroll or two from time to time.
He turns his phone to face Nicholas.
“Our fans, they…they’re calling you a bottom.”

Summary
It’s not like things go wrong right away. In fact, for a while, the year passes exactly like Nicholas predicted it would: busy and difficult sometimes, but fun nonetheless. He’s so caught up in it all that he doesn’t notice that anything is off with Euijoo until he’s in the middle of it.

Summary
Nicholas leans against the concrete wall by the station. He has to look up to meet Euijoo’s eyes, just a tiny lift of his chin. Euijoo keeps seeing the vague outlines of what Nicholas is thinking seconds before he even thinks it. In this industry—in this awful, vapid industry—it’s a virtue. Euijoo hasn’t spoken to someone this open, who makes him want to open up like this in years.
“I guess I just keep wondering,” Nicholas says, shy and unflinching in equal measure, looking right at him. “Does anybody really know you?”
Byun Euijoo is an actor with walls a mile high. Enter Wang Yixiang, his new stylist.

“So they do exist,” Yudai correctly assumes, “to be fair, there’s only one type of person that can handle your craziness.”
Nicholas looks up from his note, staring at Yudai. “And that would be?”
“Someone who’s as married to their job as you are.” Yudai replies smoothly, like it’s the most obvious thing in the whole world.
“So basically–no one.” Nicholas snorts, putting his pen inside the pocket of his scrubs top.
“Or,” Yudai counters with a sly smirk, “someone just reckless–or brave–enough to think that you’re worth it.”

Innocently enough, his dad asks, “Are you sick?”
“No,” Vernon says. He can’t make eye contact when he says it, because he’s realizing how actually stupid he is. This is the second time he’s had milk in a week, and for what? His vibes? The best vibe of all is not having diarrhea.
