He ignored the way his brother's eyes were staring holes into the side of his face. Reaching out without looking he flicked Stack on the forehead. Once upon a time his brother would have hissed in pain. He was sure Stack hardly felt it now, but he had been struck with muscle memory. Stack blinked back his shock, grinning bright and stupid. A warmth settling in his chest. His brother hardly ever touched him now. Stack didn't know if it was out of fear or disgust maybe both even.
"Quit starin' at me." Smoke huffed.
"Let me find out you making a friend Smoke."
"I ain't makin' no god damn friends."
"Yeah whatever. Louis kinda draw you in huh? No weird shit....just...." Stack fumbled, realizing how that was sounding.
Smoke ignored his fumbling. He understood what he meant. For someone so weighed down....he had a way of being a lighthouse in a storm. Like beckoning ships at sea closer. Or rather pulling out the dying embers and giving fresh air. Thats what he was....fresh air. Something new.....a change of pace.
"Yeah..." Was all Smoke offered back.

For here Lestat is: indulging his darling's demands to keep his hands to himself like an obedient dog sitting still with a treat balanced on his nose while drool dribbles down his maw and moments from sticking out his tongue panting.
Mercy, mon cher. Forgive me please, he wants to plead after another heavenly scoop of Louis's hips against his clothed crotch. He growls out in frustration instead.
Or: Lestat courts Louis's jealousy successfully, and Louis is so kind.

Daniel opens his mouth.
Armand presses his shoe painfully into Daniel’s growing erection.
Daniel jerks. Whimpers.
“Fuck—yeah. Boss. I understand.”
The pressure eases.
“Good.”
Armand brings Daniel to a private collectors’ preview because, despite all available evidence, he apparently believes Daniel can be trusted around billionaires, disputed provenance, and an open bar.
Daniel spends the evening testing that theory.
Armand eventually conducts his own experiment in corrective action.
Or: Somebody finally muzzles Molloy.

Daniel didn’t want to fight, not really. For all of his seventy two years he’d fought his sexuality, then addiction, then Parkinson’s, then vampire loneliness, and he was so, so tired of fighting. Plus fighting, at this point, would ensure that Armand’s episode continues.
He finally knows why his maker’s distress cuts him so deep. Armand glances up. His eyes are huge, apocalyptic, squeezing shut. His mouth is quivering, emitting nonsense whimpers. He’s waiting to be thrown into a wall.
Not today. Never again, if Daniel can help it. Daniel steps over to Armand, lowers himself to the ground beside him. Armand’s arms wrap around himself, bracing for impact.

Summary

Drugs don’t work, sex doesn’t work, New York hasn’t worked. Somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains, an improbable number of suicides have taken place. Somewhere in a bar in New York, Daniel hears about them. He wants to fill a void. The difference between what is real and what isn’t matters as little to him as the things he’ll find to throw into the darkness. Which, as it turns out, is quite a lot.

As Daniel looks over the newspaper, he realizes the options are bleak. Dishwasher, retail associate, tax preparer. Each has its perks, like free food, employee discounts at his mom’s favorite store, and– actually he’s not sure what he would gain from helping people do their taxes, he’d probably commit fraud by accident somehow. But each one sounds fucking awful and gets a big fat X drawn overtop it.
It’s not until the word ‘typist’ catches his attention that he finally circles a job before his arm can start to feel heavy and useless. If Daniel was paying attention, he would’ve seen SECRETARY plastered above it.

Daniel feels it the most on nights like this. The guilt, he means.
Right now, a soft rain pitter-patters on the roof of the penthouse hotel room they’re in, tripping out a delicate melody that almost sounds like the tinkling of bells. Armand is curled up next to him, blood-warm and satiated, a pleased smile stretched over his pretty face as he nestles further into Daniel’s chest. Their hands tangle together, bony knuckles on bony knuckles; their legs braid so that Armand can press his still-cold feet to Daniel’s calves. It feels domestic. It feels real. As he stares down at Armand, Daniel’s heart squeezes with an overwhelming fondness for the vampire who has set up shop in his life and refuses to leave.
And somewhere, behind all of that, the guilt. It twists his guts up in a knot, makes his stomach do that swoopy roller coaster thing. Except it doesn’t stop, it just feels like he’s in a never-ending free fall. Because Armand holds him like a lover but keeps him like a secret. Because he knows that somewhere out there is Armand’s actual boyfriend.

Louis rolls his eyes. He tries to seem unaffected, but he knows his breathing is still harsh. “Don’t bother me again. I’ll have you thrown out.”
Lestat leans into his space, casual in his intrusion. “Will you?”
Louis can’t actually throw out Lestat, not for anything he’s done so far. If Tom knew he was threatening to boot a rich customer over this, he’d shout himself hoarse. But Lestat doesn’t know that. Probably.
“Yes. I can and I will.”
Lestat’s hand wraps around Louis’ left wrist, and his grip is firm, proprietary. Louis tries to pull away, but he can’t budge Lestat’s hand. He feels panic start to creep in, insidious.
“Ah, ah, ah, it’s alright, chéri, I won’t hurt you.”
