Summary
Mistakes were inconceivable. They didn't exist. Because to be anything less that perfect was to be a failure, and to be a failure meant absolute disappointment and resent from her mother. So Peridot never stepped forth from normalcy. To do so would be inviting the inevitable newness of unknowing.
Until Lapis Lazuli blew into town. Until that beautiful, cold, stubborn girl stepped into her life, bringing uncertainty. But she also brought something else: acceptance. Something Peridot had never experienced, something she strongly doubted the existence of.
Then, there was only one small problem. Peridot had to learn to accept herself before she could possibly accept another.

To better understand her favorite human show Peridot decides to reenact some romantic scenes from Camp Pining Hearts. And she can think of no better partner in these endeavors than her beloved barnmate Lapis Lazuli. After all you’re supposed to do these sorts of things with someone you like if you want to feel the emotions described on TV and she sure likes Lapis well enough. She manages to rope Lapis and their pet Pumpkin into recreating a complicated cuddle scene under the stars with only one sleeping bag. Trouble is they don’t have a sleeping bag. But those water wings of hers could make a fine substitute.

She hates Mondays. And Wednesdays. And even Friday, for that matter. They run together; they’re boring, stupid, inconvenient.
She especially hates the days which the alarm blares for the fifth consecutive time in an imitation of a rooster’s crow, disrupting the previously serene morning silence. As she glares maliciously at the red numbers, it takes her several of the following moments to realize that her technician roommate is nowhere nearby to turn off the contraption stationed across the room.
The alarm’s imitation crows aggressively. She isn’t quite sure if she’s going to murder her roommate today or not, but she is leaning towards a hard yes.

Summary
Several years of living on U.S. Outpost 31 and Peridot hasn’t much gotten used to the cold. Her girlfriend is a few miles off base helping the Norwegians, so she’s stuck here, dealing with coworkers she can barely tolerate on a day-to-day basis. It’s manageable, if a bit dull.
Until communications are cut and they’re attacked by the Norwegians they thought were allies, chasing some… dog.
Everything changes after that. She doesn’t know who to trust. No one is who they say they say they are. It’s so cold — colder than it’s ever been and will be.

As an IT intern at Beach City Hospital, Peridot spends her time restarting computers and organizing files. Two months into her internship, her coworker Pearl introduces her to their new patient - Lapis Lazuli. She was kidnapped six months before and was found by police in a room full of mirrors. With no immediate family and no emergency contacts, Pearl asked Peridot to be Lapis' caretaker. After she agrees, Pearl tells her that Lapis is pregnant and heavily traumatized.
This fanfic is heavily inspired by "Things We Lost and Things We Gain" by teamchaosprez !! (steven universe fanfic in 2025???? crazy) It was written back in 2015 when Lapidot was just a CONCEPT, so I wanted to update it a bit according to lore and my own headcanons.

Much like a lapidary, perhaps they can help each other grow and shine into their best selves -- or even become something entirely new.
This fiction goes through the span of the Steven Universe show, keeping to canon as close as possible while showing Lapis and Peridot growing from enemies to roomies to lovers. Each chapter takes place near or around an episode, with true canon divergence happening in season 4.
