“You’re beating yourself up about something,” the other Vash comments, observation of the century right there. “Go on, then. You can tell me.”
“...Why would I do that?” Vash asks, frowning.
“Well, because I’m you?” A pout. This old ass man is actually pouting at him right now. “Think of it like… spilling your soul! But to someone who gets it. I mean, really gets it. Really. Try telling me something I wouldn’t understand. I bet you can’t.”
He’s annoying. Vash has half a mind to wonder if he’s ever this annoying, except he’s sure that he’s not. He’s always watching other people, trying to make sure he’s never too much, too pushy, too frustrating—not that it bothers him when people look down on him, but it’s one thing to receive pushback for standing on your ideals. It’s another thing to be a genuine nag, and this version of him is. Where does he get off acting like that? Does it actually get him results? Vash is having a seriously hard time wrapping his head around the idea of that.

A generous splash was poured into an upturned lid whose jar had long-since shattered. Despite the vague sense of guilt from hiding such a treat from his siblings, the first sip sent a shiver down his spine. He had been loath to brush his teeth, wanting to savor the bright, syrupy sweetness of the Fonta, like his tongue could remember how the drink fizzled in his mouth like sparks off a Gardemek. Papa had smiled at him and ruffled his hair affectionately… then, things get fuzzy.
Before he ever called himself Wriothesley, he received his first scars.

And that is the crux of the issue, she thinks as she watches him eat his meal with bandaged hands. This man is full of contradiction.
Lauds and laurels are draped over his shoulders. He would have no trouble finding a distinguished position amongst the elite in the Court of Fontaine if he so wished, yet even years after fully serving his sentence, here he remains. Such a firm believer in justice but never allowing himself the luxury of forgiveness. He hands out tickets to redemption freely and sees off reformed citizens with a wave and a wish of good luck, feet firmly planted within the confines of Meropide.
Maybe he thinks he’s beyond saving. Rebuilt, rehabilitated, but still ruined at the core. Perhaps in his mind, he’ll always be a murderer.
Sigewinne is used to patching him up, but she's never quite sure if he's left healed.

Wriothesley tensed as he glanced at his bouncing leg and almost immediately stopped moving it, shifting his seating posture to eventually straighten his back and maintain both feet flat on the floor. Neuvillette could tell the man was trying hard not to move his leg again, thus he gave the Iudex a strained smile.
“Whatever gave it away?”
Neuvillette observed the man, humming lowly.

“My… I don’t know, 154th? Or something… The years sort of start to blend together at a certain point.”
Wolfwood grumbles. “Don’t say that shit. Reminds me that you’re old.” He punctuates the complaint with a light flick to Vash’s cheek. After Vash whines again, he can hear the smile that sneaks into Wolfwood’s voice as he continues speaking. “Why didn’t you say anything? We could’ve celebrated.”
It’s not an intentional silence—Vash doesn’t think it’s a stupid question—more so that he just doesn’t know how to answer. He opens and closes his mouth. A century and a half ago, Vash celebrated this date with Rem, and with his brother… and now Rem’s bones are rotting somewhere beneath the sand, and his brother is a monster. A true monster, with no love lost for Vash or for humanity or even for their sisters who he claims to fight for. Not the person who Vash thought he was, at any rate, a hundred and fifty years ago.
What is there to celebrate, anyway? Vash is hardly better than Knives himself.

Despite Vash’s babbling, Wolfwood says nothing. He smears bruise cream over Vash’s cheek with a tenderness that is probably unearned, then draws back for the ice pack he previously wrapped in a clean towelette. When he holds it out, Vash bites down on his tongue so he won’t reject the offer out of hand. He accepts the pack with his prosthetic hand.
“...I really hate to keep making trouble for you, Wolfwood.”
“The trouble isn’t why I’m angry,” Wolfwood grunts. He clasps his hands between his knees, now, lacking anything to do with them, and averts his gaze. “There’s always gonna be trouble. You’re such a damn bleeding heart. I know what I signed up for.” His eyes return to Vash, slightly wet along the waterline, a visible crease in his brow, lips downturned at the edges. “You take yourself too damn lightly, Needle-Noggin. I can’t stand it.”
