Guys,” Bob finally said, the word a bit breathless yet as firm as he could, given the circumstances.
That finally seemed to do the trick.
The bickering ceased. They both froze, the only sounds filling the space now being the ocean's crash, a seagull's cry, and Bob's breath.
Bradley’s body straightened first, his eyes defaulting back to Bob, concern immediately softening his features.
Jake followed, beginning to slink back, but Bob grabbed hold of his arm to stop him.
A soft kiss found his temple, “Sorry, Bobby, we got a bit carried away,” Jake whispered, “Especially when it comes to you, sunshine.”
Bob nodded quickly, his throat working as he tried to settle himself from that sudden surge of pure affection from Jake.
“There’s no need to fight, though,” Bob started, his words softer now.
“Jealousy isn’t for us…remember? We agreed…”

God. How was he supposed to go back out there, gleaming and grinning and pretending everything was okay? How? Especially when deep in his gut, he knew the truth. He knew that all those shitty pre-k moms weren’t coming.
He’d checked the date and time on the invitations at least seventeen times before handing them out, and he’d had one of those blue Sisu invitations stuck to the fridge with a Happy Bunny magnet since May 1st.
Olivia’s birthday party for her school friends was on May 30th from 12 to 4. Explicitly listed that way for those not on military time.
And no one had shown up.
Bradley felt it twisting in his stomach, the urge to vomit while the urge to cry bubbled behind his eyes. God, he wasn’t ready for this kind of heartbreak. Wasn’t ready to see Olivia cry in her Raya costume.

Summary
And like second nature, Bradley found him in the wings, in the corner with two other backstage attendants.
Candy cane pieces are flying off in favor of Rat King.
Jake, when cast as the Rat King, always brought him back out for bows.
Always.
It was a miserable, quick change, and one Bradley always dropped to the floor to help with pants, socks, and shoes.
Even though he was out of breath and hadn’t helped during dress rehearsal, he’d found the corner and immediately fell in line.
He’d bunched up Jake’s Rat King pants, guiding his legs into them, only to pull off his white shoes and slide the grey socks over, the repetitive commands following “left foot. Right foot. Left foot. Right foot.” as he dressed Jake.
And right as Bradley stands back up, it happens.
Instinct, maybe, some kind of Holiday love spell...His lips found Jake’s in a quick peck. Routine. Something they’d done right before Jake slipped the head back on.
It was so habitual, Bradley hadn’t even realized he’d done it until Jake scoffed.Or, a silly little Yapfest about Hangster being in the Nutcracker!

In the dim lighting, Bradley could just barely make out this…this almost apologetic, fearful expression etched into the fibers of Jake's face.
Bradley wasn’t quite sure what that had to do with him, though he wasn’t left in the dark for long as Jake continued.
“Would you mind if I wrote about the ugliness of deployment and sent the letters to you? Give me someone I can be honest with while out there?”
Bradley Bradshaw sat frozen on the top of that picnic table, eyes wide and lips pressed together as he took his sweet time processing what’d just been asked of him.
For just a moment, the ocean seemed to speak strictly for them, the waves crashing repeatedly against the shore, rhythmic and holding the space for the two of them.
His chest felt heavy; he couldn’t put a pin in why, but it was. Shock? Fear maybe…But then, was it confusion, maybe? Why him? They’d just met, not even an hour ago, so why would he rather write about the horrors of being shipped out to a stranger? Wouldn’t he rather find a trusted friend or–

Bob and Jake didn't find it necessary to tell their guests for Christmas they were brothers. Really, they thought it was obvious. Most of the other daggers knew. Javy and Nat have insisted they all hang out at some point in front of them. It's also not like they don't have the same last names. Bob just uses their mom's maiden name and Jake uses their dads so it's easier to differentiate them.
