"I have a headache," Stephen says quietly.
It's true, but it takes effort to make it sound it. He always has a headache these days, for one thing — frankly, he always aches everywhere. A soreness settled into his very bones that descended there that night that Molly's phone rang and calcified the night he tried to kill himself several months later. The pain is familiar, and deserved, and he's used to bearing it without anything to soothe it. He isn't allowed pills anymore, after all — and, usually, he knows better than to ask.
But Morris has trusted him with work for the first time in so long, and Stephen needs to prove that he is still capable of handling it. The headache is making it feel impossible.

Stephen smiles down at his polished shoes. "Something like that."
Henry nods slowly. As if he understands what the weight beneath Stephen's words means. He brings his cigarette to his lips for another drag, slow and deep, and Stephen's pale, empty eyes watch him carefully.
"Will you put that out on me?" he asks.
It's so utterly casual that Henry is sure he must've misheard him. It startles a laugh out of him regardless — either he misheard it or it was a joke, but Stephen isn't laughing. His face is utterly earnest. His eyes are fixed on the cherry of Henry's cigarette, the fire-warm light of it in the dimness of the courtyard. It's reflected in the glassiness of his eyes, bright.

“You.” He swallowed. “This. We're not ‘dealing’ with you. Makes it sound like a bad thing.”
Or, Cars backfiring sound a lot like gunshots, and Claire Fitzroy is way too familiar with gunshots. Caring for someone is nothing like killing for them, but Six is trying is best.
