What Do We Do With A Drunken Sailor? [sonadow exchange 2026] by StryderTheHedgehog for mouselands

Summary
A shallow breeze passes by, at some point, and Sonic thinks he can smell a hint of lavender in the air, causing him to raise an eye ridge. He looks around.
How odd.
He hears some noise from below, in the water. This is to be expected, of course. Water moves. But, for a second, he thinks he sees something.
Carefully, he steps closer to the railing, peeking over the side.
Something splashes above water, briefly.
A fin? A tentacle?
He takes a few more steps forward; rests a paw against the rail.
Curiously, he leans forward more and more.
He sees… red eyes?
Are those eyes?
And then, suddenly…
…he’s leaned too far forward.

It certainly doesn't help when you yourself are an equally as stubborn, ageless ultimate lifeform.
The two try to figure it out anyways.

Inspired by Sleep Token’s newest album of the same name:
Shadow has lived long enough to watch humanity destroy themselves. Now lost in the void of space, Shadow discovers Arcadia. In this surreal landscape of pink and grey scale, he is reunited with his long lost, unrequited love, Sonic and their friends. But the god Sleep demands payment for giving Shadow this gift.

Summary
In the stretch of winter, Sonic and Shadow come together under the realization that they’re dealing with the same issue: Lonliness.
Slow season typically has Sonic hanging with his friends all the time, but now he has to bob and weave around their busy schedules. Rouge recently moved out of Shadow’s apartment with him, and he’s trying to be okay with living alone again.
But when Sonic kisses Shadow, things feel different. Exciting. They meld into this new relationship, navigating grief, quirks, and each other’s bodies.
With the help of lots of cigarettes and lots of gum.

Summary
Shadow needs money for Maria’s medical bills. Under the alias ‘Terios’, he finds steady work at the club ‘Obscura’, selling his body and offering other well-paid services. He doesn’t care — as long as he gets paid, the details don’t matter.
It’s easy to fall into the routine of it.
He can almost pretend he doesn’t mind. He can almost pretend it’s not slowly killing him. He can almost pretend he’s fine. The routine is broken when the local library hires a new assistant.

Summary
Shadow staggered to his feet; Sonic caught him at the shoulder before he fell over. “Hey,” Sonic murmured, “I meant it, you know. About being your friend.”
“I meant it too. You don’t know what you’re asking for.”
A different message than just a straight no, Shadow realized too late. He observed the sharp perk of Sonic’s ears while the grip that shifted to his bicep gave a squeeze. “Tell me. Tell me what I’m not getting.” A cough had Sonic wipe his mouth with the back of his glove. “I want to learn what it takes to be your friend.”
-
It started with the chao. Then, strange energy signatures. It was easy work; the everyday run-of-the-mill adventure leading him to an island called the Verdant Maw. Sonic’s friends would make space for him, always- but when he isn’t around, they’re still living their lives without him. He’s starting to feel the impact.
At least he can count on Shadow to stay the same.
The pair of hedgehogs work together to solve a new threat, learn just how far family extended beyond the ARK, and ask what it means to be a friend.

“Huh?” Sonic stammers out.
“Where,” Shadow begins as he slides a little further down onto Sonic’s lap, “Do you want me to touch you, Sonic? ”
And there’s the voice, the tone, he always says Sonic’s name in. The one that continuously pushed him into this feeling in the first place.

With the Tails' departure for college impending, Sonic finds himself in need of a new roommate to skirt around Amy’s moves to finally chain him down. So, when he finds out Shadow needs a chaperone for some dodgy memory-recovery experiment, moving in seems like a no-brainer.
---
In which Sonic hasn't ever considered why he just couldn't see himself with Amy, and a dark anti-hero untangling his memories may just be the key to discovering what love actually feels like.A story that is first, foremost, and endgame a romantic-comedy.
Dual POV Sonic & Shadow set in Green Hill and Central City, featuring doomed Stobotnik. Sonic is in his thirties because it is the headspace I can most accurately share, as an adult writing for adults.

Sonic the Hedgehog wasn’t gay.
If there was one thing he knew about himself, it was that he was as straight as a mother fucking arrow. He was a lady’s man, a run of the mill cis-het guy. He was the normalest and the least gay out of anyone he’d ever fucking met. And he’d met a lot of people!
It had just been a mistake. Mistakes happened!! Straight guys came to the thought of their hot rivals all the time!
