Living the life of a bachelor on his country estate in Oxfordshire, Arthur Pendragon hasn’t been much of a father ever since his ex-wife took their son to start a new life in America. Seven years later, when Mithian makes plans to remarry and sends Mordred to live with Arthur for the summer, he’s in for a crash-course in parenting. Literally. Mordred is no ordinary thirteen year old—he can set things on fire with the blink of an eye. And he absolutely hates Arthur.
Merlin Emrys teaches at the Edinburgh Academy for Magical Students; he loves his job and respects his mentor and headmaster, Gaius. So when the latter asks him to tutor Mordred as a personal favour, he can’t refuse, even though he’d rather sleep on hot coals than spend three months in the country with some stuffy old aristocrat and his spoiled brat of a son.
After a few false starts, Arthur and Merlin find common ground in their exasperation, affection, and concern for Mordred, and their mutual attraction quickly blossoms . . . but an unforeseen event threatens their fragile happiness before the summer ends.

Written for the following kinkme_merlin prompt:
Merlin gets a new job at the Pendragon mansion: He is supposed to care for the horses and keep the stables clean. He doesn't really care about the Pendragons and doesn't spend a lot of time in the mansion, so he has no idea what Arthur Pendragon actually looks like. One day he catches Arthur feeding an apple to one of the horses and mistaking him for the new stable boy, he starts lecturing him about slacking off and orders him to muck out the stable.Arthur, for whatever reason you can come up with, just goes along with it. And he keeps coming back, never correcting Merlin in his false assumptions, until he's in too deep. Because he's afraid that Merlin would suddenly hate him, if he knew the truth (because Merlin certainly seems to hate everything about the Pendragons, especially all the rumors he hears about Arthur), he does everything to prevent Merlin from finding out. Naturally that leads to a lot of awkward and weird situations.

His housemate, Arthur, is funny and generous - admittedly, he’s also a bit of a prat, but that’s kind of endearing - and Merlin has fallen utterly in love with him. So, yes, life is perfect, or at least it would be if Arthur wasn’t in love with someone else.

Summary
After completing his PhD, Merlin Emrys secured a coveted position in the labs at Pendragon Industries under the renowned Doctor Kilgarrah and his uncle Gaius. Uther Pendragon, CEO of P.I., being a good friend of Gaius' has his son Arthur share his flat with their newest employee to introduce him to the large city of Camelot, so very different to the small village of Ealdor where Merlin comes from. Their initial meeting isn't a good one, and their enforced living situation is a little strange for them both, but Merlin slots into Arthur's life perfectly, accepted into his circle of friends with ease, and both are able to force down their initial attraction to each other.
But how long can they both ignore it when their living situation shows them, time and again, that neither man is who the other first thought them to be, time and again they see the nobility and strength they never suspected lay beneath the surface?

Because his life isn't the plot of a romcom, it wasn't the moment he met Merlin at a Freshers Week party, got in a fight with him, and subsequently threw up on his shoes. No, the moment his life really went to shit was the day Gwen and Lance got together and broke the pact they had all made four years ago to date outside their group of friends. Because everyone knows that couples spawn other couples, and once all the couples have gotten together, the only thing they have left to do is set up the rest of their single friends. And when you've been secretly pining away after your best mate for the better part of a decade as Arthur has, you'd feel understandably nervous when everyone is suddenly fixated on finding the perfect match for Merlin.
