He is shocked to learn he is now married to Shane Hollander, a fact that forces him to reconcile the decisions of his past self with the expectations he inherited from his father.
--“I have this for you.” Hollander reached into his pocket, pulling out something gold, glinting under the cold hospital lighting. Holding his fist out, Hollander unfurled his hand, and the bottom fell out of Ilya’s heart, cratering through his stomach and spilling onto the floor.
Shane Hollander stood before him, palm outstretched, cradling Irina Rozanova’s golden crucifix.
Ilya flinched back, like he had been burned. Hollander’s warmth had moved too close, too fast, morphing into a threat and a violation. Hollander should not have that cross.

Summary
It is not just the sniffles. Ilya has the flu and is hiding it from Shane so he can play in a game. It turns out this was not Ilya’s best idea and he ends up passing out in the middle of the ice. Shane nurses him back to health and Ilya learns how to let Shane take care of him.
Even though he had only passed out once or twice in his entire life, he recognized the feeling instantly. It was coming. He willed it not to, especially not here, on display in the middle of the ice. Maybe, he thought, if he focused hard enough, if he was determined enough, sheer strength could hold it off.
He beelined for the bench.
Then the warning signs hit. Black splotches crept into his vision, spreading. Instinct took over and he bent at the knees, trying to steady himself, still moving towards the bench or at least he thought he was. The bench had to be close.
And then the darkness took over. Everything went black.

“Jesus, now you are just embarrassing yourself, Willy,” McKay crows. “Man gets zero play. It’s like the cardinal rule of hookups, dude. Just sex. Nothing else”
Wilkins shakes his head, somehow still beaming. “Whatever man. Nothing is going to kill this high. I’m about to play like the Hockey Gods themselves have decided I am their chosen one. You better be ready.”
Shane locks his phone and presses it upside down inside his locker. Something still feels off about his pre-ice routine, but he can’t stay in this stuffy locker room for one more minute. So he goes. Wordlessly.
OR: Shane overhears a conversation his teammates have about a hookup. He learns the cardinal rule of hookups is to never kiss, and subsequently realizes he has broken that rule. Many times. He spirals.
