After the new year and the months since then, since his hair had grown back enough to hide the scar and he started letting them come to his house, Max watched Steve carefully, learned what to look for.
She noticed the headaches and the migraines—the way he'd squint and clench his jaw and move a little more carefully, like sudden movements hurt. She noticed how it took him longer to answer questions sometimes. She noticed how he'd forget words mid-sentence and have to pause, frustrated, until he couldn’t even remember what he'd been trying to say.
Everyone called him slow. And stupid. They joked about it, teased him about getting dumber, and Steve always laughed it off or agreed with them, like it was a choice and not a consequence.
But Max could tell it bothered him; could see it in the way his smile would tighten, just for a second, before he'd shrug and change the subject.
And it bothered her too.
So she started running interference.

The face was all tight, and Charles’s was, too, as he followed Edwin through, although Charles was trying to cover it by looking confident and firm.(Edwin tries to avoid unpleasant-but-necessary medical care, Charles has to fill a role he does not enjoy, and Crystal may, somehow, not entirely against her will, be getting roped in as a platonic third to Charles and Edwin's totally-not-a-decades-long-marriage.)

He throws the car in park and removes the key before leaning forward slightly to rest his forehead on the steering wheel. The car shakes as the kids scramble out of it, slamming the doors closed behind them. Each resulting WHAM sets off fireworks behind Steve’s closed eyelids.
He just needs a minute. One minute of silence. Then, he’ll go inside to wrangle the kids and clean up before Mrs. Byers gets back.
A hand lands on his shoulder and he jumps, whipping his head to see who’s touching him. Pain floods over the left side of his head and down through his neck and shoulders. He presses a hand into his left eyebrow, trying to chase the pain away with the pressure.
Dustin still sits in the passenger seat next to him. His hand tightens on his shoulder, eyes blown wide.
“Steve, hey, you okay?”

There was the sudden quick scuff of boots on the ground, then Jack was slamming into his side, cutting off Mac’s words into a breathless grunt. Everything became a strange blur. There was the sound of a gunshot — the hell was Jack shooting at? — and Jack’s weight and momentum carried both of them staggering towards the low wall at the side of the bridge.
The edge of the wall hit Mac’s thigh. He tried desperately to stop their momentum, bracing his legs and scrabbling to grab the edge of the brick, but Jack’s half-tackle was just enough to send both of them careening over.
As Mac’s feet left solid ground, a panicked thought ran through his head. Later he’d muse that Jack had probably thought or said the exact same thing a thousand times over throughout their partnership.
What the fuck is he doing?!
