At first, Liam Dunbar had vehemently denied it. Every time those two words left Theo Raeken's mouth—"Little Wolf"—Liam would frown, roll his eyes, or growl a "I'm not little." It was a remnant of his teenage pride, the need to be taken seriously. But over time, as their relationship shifted from an awkward truce to a tense friendship and then to something infinitely deeper, the meaning of the nickname began to change for him.
He no longer heard the "little" as a put-down, but as a term of protection. And the "wolf"... that had always been the core of what they were. Theo didn't say it lightly; it was a hoarse whisper in the dark after a nightmare, a soothing murmur when Liam's rage threatened to overflow, a verbal caress loaded with an affection so profound it made Liam's heart flip. "Little Wolf" became the sound of feeling loved, of feeling understood in his entirety, beast included.
And so, one quiet afternoon, as he watched Theo focused on fixing a shelf without being asked, Liam had a thought as clear as water: I want to give him something in return. I want him to feel what I feel when he calls me that.

Theo, who was drinking coffee as if it didn't taste like poison, almost choked. "Are you comparing my sociopathic self-control to the temper tantrums of a puppy overloaded with testosterone?"
"All I'm asking is that you try," Scott insisted. "He listens to you."
That last part was so ridiculous Theo didn't even bother to refute it. But, for some reason he didn't want to examine, he agreed.

Liam moves back as if burned. His eyes are wide, and for the first time since he barged into the room Theo notices the bags under them, the white pallor to his usually sun tanned skin and the still healing worried bite marks on his lips. "You-" he runs a hand through his hair, looking off to the side, expression troubled, "what exactly do you remember?"
"I just told you."
"No, what you just told me happened more than a year ago," Liam says carefully, eyeing him as if expecting him to take off running at any moment. "I'm asking you about last night, Theo."
Theo wakes up thinking he's finally managed to escape his sister's torment, only to find out that this is not a recent development and he's actually missing a considerable chunk of memories. Good thing Liam's here to help him get back into the flow of things.

"Why isn't he healing?" Liam finds himself asking, almost frantic. "What did they do to him?"
"More importantly, why?" asks Malia, and for some reason, it makes Liam want to scream. "Why would they torture him when he would have easily told them everything they need to know?"
"Unless he didn't," Scott says quietly, and the air turns heavy; stifling.
