Abaddon tilts his head, his eyes narrowing to scrutinize her features more closely. “You always look like you’re waiting for me to bite you,” he says softly, watching her stir. “Do I make you that uneasy?”
Heather swallows. Is she really that obvious? “No—not exactly. I, ugh—it’s hard to explain,” she says, fumbling her words slightly, her nerves making her jittery. “...I know Esther loves me... And she loves you... But you and I—” She hesitates, cheeks heating in embarrassment. “I don’t know where we stand.”
Abaddon’s brows draw up in confusion. “But we stand here. In the kitchen. Making cocoa. That’s something, isn’t it?”
Heather blinks, surprised, before she remembers Esther mentioned the demon has a tendency to take things literally. She lets out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. “Yeah. I guess it is,” she mumbles.
Or: Heather and Abaddon have a late-night heart-to-heart over cocoa of all things.
