Summary
Since the first shards of flak struck Alex’s Mustang his mind and body could not stop moving—racing, calculating—so he spent his days limping and shaking, gritting his teeth. Categorizing and repeating everything he had learned:
The guards were predictable once you knew what to look for.
The routine of prisoner-of-war life was lousy but survivable with certain strategies.
Egan and Cleven weren’t gonna survive the winter.
______
Or,
Alex tries to make sense of life at Stalag III, but the two majors from the Hundredth throw a wrench in things.

Summary
He takes the final step, lifts the lantern to flood the empty station with light, and sees a man laying on his stable floor.
He’s brunette, sweating, breathing unsteadily. There’s blood wiped messily on his forehead, down his neck. Half laying, half sitting up against the stack of haybales Buck keeps at the bottom of this station, he’s got one bloody hand pressed to his right thigh, which is caked with crimson. His other hand rests wearily on the Colt that’s tucked into the waistband of his pants.
Gale’s heart jumps, he wishes suddenly that he really did have a rifle, but when the man sees that Buck’s unarmed he raises the hand slowly, in a shaky surrender.
-
“You got a name?” Buck asks, in an attempt to distract.
The stranger swallows and takes a deep breath. “Bucky.”
Buck almost pauses in his work. He scoffs and shakes his head. “I’ll be damned.”
“Why’s that?”
“People call me Buck.”
Bucky huffs out a pained laugh, which quickly devolves into a groan. When he’s finished, he says, “Goddamn fate.”-
The one where stablehand Gale finds outlaw John “Bucky” Egan bleeding out in his stables.
(The sequel, seven miles out of freedom town, has been posted.)

Summary
The first letter arrived right to Tim's desk.
He didn’t think much of it at first. It was a plain white thing, a tidy little card tucked unobtrusively in amongst the stack of memos and reports from other departments that his secretary had left on his desk. He spent several minutes getting settled before he even really glanced at it.
Finally, he began scanning his stack, zeroing in on the card only because it looked more interesting than a memo.
The cardstock was good quality. It landed in his palm with a satisfying schlak.
The handwriting on the card was… odd.
Neat, perfectly legible, but shaky - like a child anxiously practicing their letters. It was so nice speaking with you the other day, it read. I hope you’ll make time for me again sometime soon!
It was punctuated with a little crooked smiley face that had been crossed out and redrawn, too carefully to look natural. The eyes were perfect, ballpen circles.

Summary
Usually, Noel was proud, or even perhaps a bit smug, that his creativity made him much more observant than any other bastard he’d come across. He was always on the lookout for new phrases and music lines to inspire him, and perhaps steal if the original author was so lucky, which opened his eyes and ears up to all sorts of details that most other people missed—forgotten lyrics and stray chords buried in old songs played on the radio late at night, random lines half heard on the telly or read in magazines Meg left out, even rhyming bus ads or grave warnings on cigarette packs could strike his fancy. But the downside to this particular skill was that sometimes he noticed things he’d rather not.

“I’m fucking fine, Crowder,” Raylan growls. “Dickie’s got a mean arm, but he ain’t exactly Major League.” He shoots Boyd a suspicious glare, but he’s still rumpled enough that it’s not that intimidating. “Don’t tell him I said that.”
“Seeing as at the moment I’d more likely be taking a bat to Dickie Bennett’s other knee, I think your secret is safe with me,” Boyd answers.
