“You assume I mean you harm…” he utters softly.
And just like that, the stern, rigid scowl is instantly wiped off your face.
The man in the truck sounds…
…sad.
Not offended. Nor angered by your thinly-veiled implication.
Just sad. Dispirited, even. As if it’s only just occurred to him that you might have perceived him as a threat.

And that’s why he was back here. The pull of that warm, fuzzy feeling felt intoxicating. Orion obviously didn’t expect it, if he did, he probably would have tried to capture it, then store it into a precious part of his mind for easy access. But now, he has resorted to this. It shouldn’t be hard — again, it’s not like he hasn’t done it before — but this felt different. Such a breach of privacy with his best friend felt wrong. But was anything Orion doing ever right? He slacked off work, breached archives, sold sensitive information, forged contraband… Orion erased the moral part of his programming a long time ago. He couldn’t even remember if he had one to begin with.
So why was this so difficult?
[My own Transformers: Shattered Glass AU, modeled upon Transformers One, with Orion Pax and D-16 swapped in roles. This AU is largely contributed with art and ramblings in equal parts with Ornith and Joan (@ornithyristor & @harquebuse respectively on twt) who have basically been my cheerleaders whilst I wrote this.]

The Matrix got tired of the BS going in Cybertron.
Optimus is duct-taping Iacon back together.
Megatron is sad, missing his friend and taking it on the High Guard—sorry, Decepticons.
Primus himself was tired.
So the Matrix does what any exhausted divine artifact would do:
It yeets them into the past.
But not just any past—
waaay before the war. Before Orion Pax was forged. Before D-16 had a name. Before Sentinel ruined everything. Before… basically all the trauma.
A few Autobots and Decepticons get dragged along for the ride.
They land in the era of the Twelve Primes. Also hunted Matrix so say hi to the ghost Primes.

"Sunny?" Sideswipe spoke up again, sounding hesitant.
Which was strange, because his brother never hesitated. He sent the mech a harsh glare, to which his brother only rolled his optics.
Sunstreaker ignored him, sure that Sideswipe was only going to make some wisecrack, and took stock of his frame. His color was mostly gone, and he looked horrendous, but he could fix that. Then he noticed his pedes.
His pedes didn't reach the end of the berth. Why didn't his pedes reach the end of the berth?
He froze, then snarled and lunged to grab his brother's servo. Sideswipe sputtered, but he ignored it and drew the servo closer, pressing his own to it to compare.
Smaller. It was smaller.Or: Sunstreaker's frame wasn't always that of the big, powerful warrior. Grievous injury during a battle forces him to be reframed to his original specs. This changes things.

Summary
After the events of Transformers: Prime, Starscream is beaten to near-death by Predaking, leaving him completely blind. When a ground bridge suddenly opens in front of him, Starscream takes the chance at rescue and crawls through, only to find himself on the Nemesis with the remaining Autobots. Supplies are limited, and Starscream is forced to live without optics until a suitable replacement set is discovered or built from scratch. Alone, blind, without a leader to serve (or overthrow), or even a war to fight anymore, Starscream is left completely powerless for the first time, having no choice but to submit to the Autobots or take his chances on the ruins of Cybertron. Optimus Prime is dead, but the Autobots honor his spark by giving the seeker one final chance to change his ways, as they know he would have. Starscream, stripped of all of his power, is forced to face what is left, finding nothing but a husk of the mech he was before the war. Is it truly possible to change after losing so much? Or is he doomed to repeat his past mistakes?
