An astounded laugh catches in Astarion’s throat. What an absurd situation he finds himself in. Here he sits, half-naked with his partner sitting between his legs and a comb in his hands. A hundred years ago – hells, even a few months back – this would have felt like a scene in a sappy romance novel that he had read and rolled his eyes at, finding it an unrealistic portrayal of humanoid connection. He would have been fully exposed by now, performing pleasurable acts to those who saw his crystal ball stare and projected their fantasies into the glass. Gale remains quiet, but the atmosphere feels heavy; burdened by the unasked and unanswered.

“Here,” Anthony pulls a cigarette out of the carton and hands it to Frank, who accepts it gladly, then takes another one out for himself, “for your troubles.” He lights Frank’s before his own, feeling Frank’s eyes on him as he breathes in, watches the cherry glow to life, still silent. Trying to find the words. They’re both leaning against the cool metal of the bus, but Frank’s turned towards him, hips canted forward. It’s fucking maddening.
“So, what’s up, then?” Frank finally asks. “Not gonna ditch you now, ‘cause you let me bum a cig off of you and it’d be an asshole move of me to just leave right after, but, um.” He gestures loosely with his cigarette hand. “What can I do for you?”
Anthony exhales slowly, tracks the curl of smoke into the air until it dissipates, then mumbles, “I’m gonna tell you something really fucking crazy and you’re just gonna have to believe me.”
(Anthony falls asleep in 2024 next to the love of his life, and wakes up in a world that might as well have been a lifetime ago. The situation is less than ideal.)

Frank's fingers are surprisingly gentle on his scalp, ruffling it up, carding through it. "We'd probably have to wash it first, though," he says thoughtfully.
