Charlie Swan’s life had a routine. It was a little lonely, sure, since he and Renée had called it quits, but that was sixteen years ago. He woke up early, he worked, he helped people where he could. It was a good routine.
Until, that is, his routine was disrupted, not only by the bodies being found along Route 112, but by Dr. Carlisle Cullen, the new consulting physician on the case. Carlisle who, as it happened, also knew something about loneliness, having practiced it for well over three hundred years himself.

"Shit," Maverick curses, righting them with no small amount of struggle, fighting the failing jet. "Rooster, listen to me. We're going to land," he says, turning sharply back toward the shore. He scans the landscape outside of the cockpit, looking for somewhere, anywhere, clear enough for them to set down.
"What?!" Rooster shouts.
"No other choice," Maverick says, spotting a clearing in the trees. It's not ideal, but it'll have to do. He's getting more and more warning lights flashing at him, and they're running on borrowed time. "It's going to be rough," he warns. Even if they had a runway that was paved and not snow-covered dirt, they're missing a landing gear.
This is going to hurt.

Or, Maverick and Rooster don't make it back to the carrier in that F-14. Cue a Goofy Movie-esque road trip, only the estranged father-son pair have to figure out how to make it home from enemy soil without aid, backup, or documentation.
Oh, and everyone back home thinks they're dead.

Chief of Police Charlie Swan is too old for this mess. Too old and too sick of this shit to pretend Forks is just a sleepy old rural town anymore. Between the gruesome corpses and the quiet, unsettling doctor Cullen who shows up like a statue in pressed slacks, lying through his teeth, Charlie’s got more questions than answers—and no one seems too keen on giving him either.
Charlie’s trying not to notice how his breath catches when the doc gets too close. He’s also trying not to notice how the bodies keep piling up, unsolved. Neither effort is going particularly well.
And if one more person tells him it was a bear, he’s going to shoot something. Probably not a bear.

When the Cullens finally stop her, they discover that her last victim had to pay a high price: Charlie is found mid-transformation in the forest.
There is a lot to explain to him when he wakes up, and Charlie himself will have to come to terms with his new existence, and the fact that he just cannot stop feeling attracted to a certain married blond doctor.
