Steve sighs, like he’s trying to laugh but he can’t quite manage it. “I’m sorry, man,” he says too lightly, “gonna need you to drive for a bit. I know it’s not part of the plan, but hey.” He gets out a laugh now, but all it does is set Eddie’s teeth on edge. “Henderson said you’re good at—what’s it called, in your game? Improv?”
And Eddie hates it, hates how soft Steve’s voice is, hates how the conversation is so clearly a distraction, a last ditch attempt at protection from… he doesn’t know. He doesn’t want to know.

An absolute delight, full of humor even as it faces hard decisions and harder mental blocks. Everyone has a perfect voice, and the way it lifts secondary characters off the page and forces a whole personality in where the movies may be a little lacking is fabulous. I felt for characters I haven't thought much about, as if they were personal friends. This is a good, solid read that constantly throws witty banter right in your face, snarking through all the damage these characters carry with them. The descriptions alone made me howl more than once in laughter, and the way it slips through POV characters seamlessly is just grand. 10/10 why are you reading this and not the story?

I know, the tags, but actually this is a hell of a story. It approaches A/B/O fic as an American ideal of bullshit narratives and exposes a lot of things about every 'ism it can think of in the process. It's a deconstruction of A/B/O fics as celebrations of control/terror/force into an outside view that thinks that maybe they need to check themselves. Very approachable.

It's odd, really, how much people don't realize they take for granted. The corpse is warm, but my entire being trembles with the fear pulsating within like a rabid beast. All my instincts are screaming at me and I notice all of a sudden something that should have been obvious to me: this is the first person I've held from whom I can feel no pulse, no breath, nothing. It's traumatizing, and oddly enough, I'm harder than granite.
