He hears about the dread pirate Blackbeard and his kraken daemon, cursed to live at sea forever, and is fascinated by the legend.
Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, hears about the Gentleman Pirate, who doesn’t have a daemon, and sees an opportunity to escape the life that traps him.

Stede brings his arm up so his cheek has something to rest on, and he breathes a little sharper as he resituates himself, and the entirety of Ed’s body feels like it’s floating with both the residual panic of before, and the overwhelming calm Stede has managed to conjure in this tiny bathroom now. And thank you doesn’t seem anywhere near big enough for what Stede has given him, and Ed’s not sure he’d be able to say it again without his voice breaking something awful, but he can try. He can sure as fuck try.
