Harvey was a statue. Not his usual imposing courtroom presence, but stiff, like he’d been slapped. His hand gripped the doorframe hard enough to make his knuckles pale.
Standing in the hallway was a woman in her late fifties, maybe early sixties, trim, put-together, holding a beige purse like it was a peace offering. Her eyes were the same shape as Harvey’s. Same angle. Except hers were red-rimmed, like she’d been crying. Or expecting to.
"Harvey," she said. Just that.

If you’ve spent even five consecutive minutes in a room with them—and I have spent several years, which frankly deserves a medal—you understand that those two idiots have been orbiting that outcome like stubborn satellites for a very long time. Desire opens perfectly painted lips, the exact colour of a bruise, and then closes them again. They look to Despair, who shifts anxiously.
"It is a delicate matter. We'd like to come in, Hob Gadling. It is about our late brother."
An accusatory silence settles for a few seconds, and then Hob disrupts it like a startled flock of birds, shoving the door open wider.
"Fine. Make it quick though, I've got stuff to do."The twins come to Hob at the behest of their late brother, to fulfil his final wish - with Hob's help.

A beat passed filled with genuine consideration, enough to make Hob’s heart leap, his weight shifting forward in his seat. “Tuesday, then.”
