For a very long time, Sanemi has known she'd rather be a girl. But given the sorry state of her life, there's bigger things to focus on, and it's not like she could ever change something like that anyway. So she ignores it, hides it, and pours all her energy into hunting down demons.

Until eventually, she's sent to look into the disappearances on the Mugen train. She expected the Lower Moon. But what she never expected was the Upper Moon who took one look at her, declared he didn't fight women, and fled.

Baffled by how the demon even knew such a thing, but even more certain she could easily kill the Upper Moon if he wasn't going to take her seriously, Sanemi makes it her new mission to hunt him down.

And well... how could Akaza not get attached to a slayer with such an overwhelming fighting spirit, who is bound and determined to fight him every chance she gets?

While patrolling his region, Kyojuro finds and kills a demon. Nothing unusual, except this one has left something behind. A little half-demon girl has now been orphaned, and Kyojuro has no idea what to do with her.
Not that he has much time to decide, because Akaza is quick to declare that he will take her. Not that he cares about the brat, but he knows Kyojuro will be quick to pay more attention to him if this little girl is involved. The slayer will have to engage with him, if only to make sure the kid is still breathing.
Horrified but unable to stop Akaza, Kyojuro has no choice but to go along with the arrangement. He can only hope he manages to get the girl away from Akaza before it's too late and she ends up a monster in every sense of the word.

“Oh sweet thing,” says the creature in a susurrant hiss dredged straight from the depths. The cadence of its speech rises and falls as the tides; Kyojuro feels himself being drawn closer, closer. Then its hand is on his hand, and his hand is being folded between its webbed fingers. Its skin is cool and smooth to the touch, like glass. “I never meant for things to happen this way.”

“You—What are you?” asks Kyojuro. That rational part of his mind is still fighting for control of this moment; it tells Kyojuro to question, to examine, and to most of all flee.

“I am Akaza. I called for you. You harkened, don’t you remember?”
