Slade turned the stove off. He scooped the dumplings, bought frozen from the local Asian grocery store, now cooked to a perfect crisp golden bottom, onto two plates.
He carried them to the attached kitchen island where Dick was watching him, sprawled over the table, cheek resting on his arms. The buckle of the leather collar at his throat caught the light.
Dick was down deep, quiet and loose limbed, no sign of the sharp edge of his usual watchfulness. He had been down for a couple hours. The sight still warmed something in Slade’s chest. That he got to have this. Dick Grayson, Nightwing, trusting him enough to go under, to let go of his constant vigilance.

Dick hasn't heard from Slade in months. Which is fine and normal, because what are they anyway? Partners, lovers, EWB (enemies with benefits), all of the above? Regardless, they're certainly nothing that keeps tabs on each other.
While on an operation of sorts as a favor to a royal friend, Dick and his siblings know it's going to be a piece of cake. A quick planting of evidence and they'll have the rest of the night free to live it up at quite the extravagant party.

“You're distracted," Slade says as he enters the training room. Dick shrugs.
Dick adjusts into his fighting stance, and curls two fingers in the universal ‘come at me’ gesture.
Slade studies him for a moment. Not his stance, not his guard. Him.
"What's eating you, kid?"
Dick's jaw tightens, "Nothing."
Slade hums, clearly unconvinced. Then he moves.
