It was a normal mission. Dismantling fighting rings was routine for M'staeng at this point. What was not normal was getting himself captured on one of those missions, but that was fine. H'kye killing him when she inevitably rescued him scared him more than anything the Homn'cli could do to him. It wouldn't be too bad.
Of course, he didn't expect for the Homn'cli to have captured a fucking human, much less make them his cellmate. Sharing a cage with a species considered death incarnate wasn't how M'staeng saw his imprisonment going.

The dynamics around presenting ones secondary gender are a complex and emotional time. Thankfully, the more volatile aspects have long been bred out, leaving at most, some dull aches and annoying hormonal changes. Overall, it was just another facet of puberty to contend with.
Unfortunately for Ed, his father was very old. It would've been helpful to know, before now.
