Follow this supernatural, political, martial arts, romance fantasy period drama told by the four shinigami who founded the Gotei Thirteen: delve into the origins, powers, and loves of noble, sickly, and fractured Ukitake Jūshirō, flamboyant, sensitive, unwilling heir Kyōraku Shuhui, repressed, seemingly reformed, murderer-turned-healer Unohana “Yachiru” Retsu, and steely, manipulative, uncompromising Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni.

Beginning with the end of Ukitake's current life in the canon, and opening with the aftermath of his dramatic destruction of the Sōkyoku, follow Kubo’s canon from the points of view of each of the Four Pillars of the Gotei Thirteen as Yamamoto goes on the offensive to consolidate power to the Gotei Thirteen and pursue an enemy intent upon upending the order of existence itself.

Immerse in the relationships and plots as he hunts down traitors and enemies with Ukitake as his nerve centre, Kyōraku as his spearpoint, and Unohana as his balance.

What to expect

Expect a whole lotta of derivatives which are original work — I stress ‘work', because I work very hard at plotting, characterisation, and world building. My aim is to make this treatment as seamless as possible with Kubo’s published canon in hopes that Netflix will one day pick this up.

Expect alternate canon to fill in the gaps left by Kubo’s published canon, especially the backstories, characterisations, and sub-plots. Expect some AU parts to expand Kubo’s universe to include Buddhist concepts.

Kubo’s older characters are the main cast. This series tells their stories — their loves, their lives, and their sacrifices, as intelligent and non-archetypal leading men and women who went through more shit in their lives than the younger generations for the sake of the greater good. Expect canon teen characters to appear only in supporting roles to support the plot. Expect absence of central teen characters, teen issues, school settings, and school concerns.

Expect two central relationships: that between a founding father and his two disciples, and that of the love and soul bond between martial brothers Ukitake and Kyōraku. Expect secondary relationships that enrich these two central relationships. Expect love scenes crafted with emotions and Japanese aesthetics.

Expect no self-indulgence, no self-insert, no reader-insert, no Mary Sues, no porn, no smut, no fluff.

Expect Kubo's villians to appear, but also expect the true bad 'guys' to be Kubo's portrayal of a stubborn, stagnated, and treacherous Soul Society government who is at the root of all problems afflicting a rapidly evolving citizenry.

Expect fight scenes which are a mash-up of Kubo's style and Chinese Wuxia and Xianxia. Expect a complete lack of neverending power-ups, lengthy overly testosteronised fight sequences, and overemphasis on fighting power.

Because BLEACH is Japanese, expect much more Japanese feudal cultures and settings than the published manga and anime.

And expect plots, characterisations, detailed world building, and just a little bit of a culture that English-speakers do not normally encounter.

A final word

If I want to instantly hit up thousands of views, kudos, comments, and bookmarks in a short period of time, I will write porn, smut, or fluff.

But I do not write to indulge in porn, smut or fluff.

I write to tell the missing pieces of an already very good story concept.

I write to practice the snowflake structure storytelling technique — this is why my updates seem roundabout instead of following a linear path starting from the beginning and ending with the end. I layer on pieces.
