Zuko's health is improving, and that's good. Ideal. But the better he gets, the closer Katara is to leaving the Fire Nation.
She's got a whole day scheduled for them, as always, but Zuko has other plans, things about his home he wants to show his friend before she leaves. And as it turns out, there is far more that needs healing in the Fire Nation Palace than the body of the boy king.
Oh, and it's almost, very, certainly positive that Zuko is maybe just a little bit falling in love with someone who maybe just a little bit loves him too.

See, the thing is— Agni fucking damnit— Zuko doesn’t regret helping Sokka rescue Hakoda from Boiling Rock. It was a step in the right direction, a display of loyalty, a step towards forgiveness. (Zuko doesn’t pale at the thought of loyalty. He doesn’t. He’s just tired, is all, tired and possibly dehydrated.)
However. He will concede that he may have inadvertently fucked himself over, because in the days and weeks after the rescue, Hakoda won’t stop looking at him with something like disappointment in his eyes. That’s not good. It’s really not good, actually, and in fact, Zuko might as well be dead where he stands. Well. He’s had a good run. Not really, but it’s easier if that’s what he tells himself. If he’s lucky, it won’t be too hard to find another firebending teacher for Aang, and—
Oh Agni. Oh fuck. He’s coming over. Smile, Zuko, smile for Agni’s sake, chin up, back straight, head empty, no thought, only respect, respect and survival, it’s going to be fine—

It takes everything Zuko has to suppress a nervous laugh. He is really and truly fucked.

It has been said that when the time came, one day you would look into a mirror and see someone else. Not just anyone else, but your soulmate. Agni would show you your soulmate, your soulmate would see you too, and the two of you would be reunited. It was a beautiful, sacred affair, to find your other half in your lifetime. A time when you needed the other the most.
Zuko couldn't agree less. Zuko would greatly appreciate it if someone would explain to him why the idea of meeting his soulmate when he least expected it was supposed to be a good thing! It sounded like the worst thing that could ever happen to him! He didn't want to be 'known'. He didn't want to be 'found'. He didn't want to meet his soulmate period. End of discussion. No thank you, come back never. Go bother someone else.
There was just one problem Zuko hadn't considered. Why did Sokka have to be so handsome??

Zuko nearly jumps out of his skin. There’s no way that was his teacup. It sounded close. His eyes dart around the room and he hears a single quiet knock at the door. Zuko silently speeds his way to the door and grabs one of his dao swords off the wall mount. He slowly peeks out of the peephole and sees nothing. If this is some ding dong ditch situation, he’s going to be pissed.
He grabs the doorknob tentatively, adjusting his grip on the sword in his other hand. He knows he’s probably overreacting but it’s 3 am on a Tuesday. Not exactly the best time for unannounced visits.He turns the doorknob slowly and is immediately pushed back by the weight of the door against him like someone is pushing it open from the other side.
