    The small turtle lifted his eyes to his father. Dad was a small, fat man/rat. His belly filled in his shiny robes. Salt and pepper hair decorated his pudgy face and slid down his shoulders in a knotted mess. Dad held a spoon out to him. “Say ‘ah’!”

    The turtle made no such noise, but ate from the spoon nonetheless. The rat man sighed and ran a hand over his bumpy head. “One day you will speak, my son. One day.”

    Raph tapped at the table with a wide smile. He clicked his teeth and grabbed for his dad. The small man served him another spoonful. Raph ate the spoon.

    Casey Junior didn’t remember too much about his dad. Which, well, was reasonable considering she’d died when he was barely five. There were a few things he remembered, of course. His snaggle-toothed smile, her big laugh, playing with her tail. But that was about it. And every time he asked one of his uncles or his mother about her, they’d say they were busy and walk off.
    He could understand that too. Grief was an absolute wrecking force. CJ could barely talk about Uncle Donnie without a tear coming to his voice cracking with emotion.

    Considering all of this, you would assume that CJ wouldn’t be too impacted when he saw his father’s teenage self. After all, he didn’t have too many memories of him. It shouldn’t have hurt him so much. But, well, it did. God, it hurt worse than seeing his mom. It didn’t make sense.

    He did know one thing for sure, however; he got his height from Raphael’s side.

    She doesn’t look bad. Does that mean she looks pretty? Does that mean Raph likes her romantically? He tries to picture her kissing him and almost tears a muscle in his face from wincing so fast. His stomach doesn’t like that; it’s churning like mad, and his brain doesn’t either, frankly, spitting the thought out as soon as it comes.

     

    It’s weird. It feels weird. But that doesn’t mean he’s weird – he just chalks it up to him being too young to think about things like that.

     

    He’s fine. He’s normal.

     

    And she’s… pretty. Sure.

     

    “Yeah. She’s good-looking,” he says, and tries very hard to make it sound natural, but Raphael Hamato is not very good at lying.
