Then her feet float out of the concrete for the jump, and Joy realizes. She's going to die. The first thing she feels is the thud. Her mouth, nostrils, and ears filled with water, and she had always hated chlorine, but now it was chlorine that had dragged her into oblivion. She learned to swim at age 4, she fell off her bike at age 8 and hit her head, she lost granma when she was 19. She is 25 and she will drown. She had a date at 5 PM at a really nice restaurant downtown. She'll never get that date.
