The cellar is the same as it always is, the same as every month, and the absence of pack, of company and comfort and anything else, really, tears at him, calls from beyond the silver, untouchable door and the stone walls that keep him from the light of the moon.
The pacing increases, more and more frantic by the hour, until the circles it spins over and over again on the floor of the cellar drive it mad— and no biting at the stonework edges of the staircase, no scratching or tearing at the floors makes the walls give way, doesn’t provide a glimpse of the moon above or a relief of the panic and ferity that fester in the recesses of its mind.
The wolf paces, and paces, and rears its head up and howls.

He’s seemed… different, lately — he’s always a bit high-strung, tense and nervous, but Merritt’s seen him when he spills out of Lula’s bedroom with sparkly nails to match hers, or coming downstairs with the side of his hair in a braid — and there’s the hint of a smile that seems a little more natural, a little more delighted than anything else.
There’s something heavy in his gaze as he watches Lula on occasion, when she whips out her lipstick after dinner and touches up the smudges, or when Merritt gets downstairs and the two of them are on the couch — Daniel choosing his favourite eyeliner look for her to try on, something unreadable on his face.
It’s hard to parse out, sometimes — Merritt’s not always entirely sure what it is, but he sees the way Daniel’s eyes seem to get stuck on the little tin of makeup in Lula’s hands, the way the glitter seems to catch the light and reflect it back — and it’s not hard to figure out, all of a sudden.

Summary
A Modern Family post finale AU taking place as if in show ended in 2021. Mitchell himself highlighted reasons he wouldn't survive in Missouri and for some reason tried to justify the move with Cam saying he couldn't forgive himself if Mitch was miserable. That and the last episode(s) started one month after they both adopted Rex and bought a new house. Maybe that was supposed to lead into the spinoff that never happened. So, my series is about the Tucker-Pritchett family staying in California and the adventures that followed. I'll let you know what year it is and at least how old Lily and Rex are.
Series rating due to New Romantics and ch 4 of Zinnia being explicit. Both are skippable, Zinnia ch 5 has a couple paragraphs in the beginning summarizing what happened in the last chapter.

Dylan glanced back up at Jack’s face, but the younger of the two men was staring intently at the lock. Dylan caught the look of bruises around Jack’s neck but he pushed that aside for another time. He cupped the back of Jack’s neck with his hand, forcing himself to ignore that startled gasp at the touch, and with a soft command said, “Jack, looking into my eyes.”
Jack looked into Dylan’s eyes and Dylan saw it immediately. The slightly glaze of hypnosis blinded Jack’s brown eyes.

Dylan hums uncomfortably, eyes darting between Jack and Daniel before settling somewhere on the ceiling for a moment. “I mentioned that the Eye had some weird experimental stuff up here, right?”
It was the first thing they’d been told when they’d first arrived, actually — don’t touch anything weird, don’t break anything and don’t ingest any of the sketchy things they find in either the cellar or the attic. “Uh,” Jack says, intelligently — “does breathing in red powder count as ingesting?”
Based on the flat look Dylan sends him, the answer ranges somewhere between yes and duh. He sighs, and he reaches up to pinch the bridge of his nose. “I’m gonna make some phone calls, see what exactly was in it. Until then, stay put, don’t do anything weird and stay out of the attic. I don’t need you guys breathing in anything else and making this worse.”

Daniel and Jack accidentally break a magic potion in the Eye's attic — and temporarily swap personalities. This is not hard to figure out — it's only hard to adjust to, unfortunately for both of them. Everyone else suffers, too.

“You don’t know that,” Bosco says determinedly, and Charlie can’t stop the grin on his face as he turns to look at him. Bosco’s always contrarian solely for the sake of it, determined to disagree only because he can, and it would appear that not even meeting one of their biggest idols could stop him. “We could totally still be rational people.”
“You pick pockets at pop-up magic shows,” Atlas says derisively, “you’re not rational people in the slightest. I know you’re getting a pretty good score, and me asking you to stop while offering no incentive is practically useless. So, here — I’m paying you to quit robbing my audience. Now, begone.”
