Summary
"It had been a subject of debate all day; the Jacobs family kept their front lawn free of leaves in the fall but left their backyard (where all of their trees were) to gather leaves until Esther and Mayer decided it was time for their kids to help out and spend a Sunday raking the leaves and then taking them to the local yard waste site."
No one wants to rake leaves at the Jacobs household but they end up having a leaf fight anyway.

Pain was something that came with the “poor kid on the streets of New York” gig.
Pain, dirt, holes in shoes and clothes, hunger pangs, that came with it.
All that came right along with living day to day on a couple dimes a week. Fights were unavoidable when you were in charge of a group of kids, or even if you weren’t, really, and when the choice was between new shoes, lunch, or a place to sleep out of the rain or snow, well, medicine cost more than going hungry a few days. There was one right choice and two wrongs ones there, for the most part.

The most noticeable mark he had wasn’t even a scar, it was the bruises across his knuckles that barely seemed to fade and never seemed to heal. Occasionally they made it all the way to yellow before the bruises were suddenly fresh again. Red to blue to purple to green to yellow, then back to red. Sometimes fresh bruises were accompanied with a bruised nose or eyes, telling him whoever his soulmate was had likely lost the fight or at least had a harder one, but not often.
And the bruises on his knuckles never went away.
