UPDATED 7/4/2024: This is the first part of the story of Smoke, an Appalachian Raider facing an identity crisis and looking for her place in the end of the world. Desperate to find out who she is, in this series, she gets a clue to where her birth parents are and, with the help of a Vault dweller, leaves her home of West Virginia and begins a thousand-mile journey through the nuclear apocalypse, hoping to find answers.
She has a lot to learn.
This story began as a character study and snowballed on me. Smoke's story covers this series, then the second (Rekindled) and finally the third (Melting Point) and ended up being 300k+ words all told. I've made a second pass to fix SPaG and make it a bit more fandom-blind-friendly, but anyone who knows any Fallout at all will know the basic setting.
