But he had set aside whatever he was working on, and he was looking expectantly at Winter when he entered: in deference to Kieran’s disinclination for keeping secrets, Winter rarely asked his redcaps to leave the room for conversations. It was bewildering after something like a lifetime in service to Arawn the Elder-King. But he would do as his King asked. “Winter. What news?”
Winter did not speak until he heard the study door shut behind him. “I have had the occasion to meet Christopher Herondale, my liege.”

“He has never been so ill in my recollection,” Mark said quietly. He was sitting on the bed by Kieran’s head, stroking his hair. Cristina had dragged a chair around the other side of the bed and sat facing the set of double doors across the room, close enough to soothe Kieran in his uneasy slumber but in a good position to nail the next person who entered with a throwing knife, if need be. By tacit agreement, they’d each positioned themselves between Kieran and the points of entry, the servants’ entrance on Mark’s side and the main doors for Cristina. “Not during our time in the Hunt, and not until now.”
“There was the time we helped him escape from the Unseelie Court,” Cristina reminded him. “The monkshood arrow.”
“He was mostly conscious then, more or less. Enough to be frustrating about it. Pulling out the arrow the way he did…” There was no real annoyance in Mark’s voice, only affection. He leaned down to Kieran, their foreheads nearly touching. Cristina felt a pang at the sight. The first time they’d been able to be together, all three of them in one room, and it was because someone had tried to kill Kieran. “If you wake up now, Kier, you can be as frustrating as you like. I’ll allow it,” he teased softly. “I won’t even stop you.”
There was, of course, no response, and Mark straightened up with a sigh, a little more subdued.
