After Katniss takes her place on stage, Effie exhales, and, shakily, takes a few steps to the bowl with the two slips of paper. For a split second, her and Haymitch make eye contact — then she reaches into the bowl, and unfolds the piece of paper.
Maybe it's his mind playing old tricks on him, but he swears that he witnesses the small gasp from Effie that seals his fate even this far across the square. She barely says the name aloud, but Haymitch catches it. Of course he does.
"Peeta Mellark."
Because for the second time in his life, Haymitch hasn't been chosen as tribute.
"I volunteer as tribute."
And for the second time in his life, he's going into the arena anyway.

Or: District Twelve only has three legible victors for the Third Quarter Quell. And the odds have never been in Haymitch Abernathy's favour - so it's entirely unsurprising when things take a turn for the worse.

Summary
After winning the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss has to deal with the trauma from the tortures she went through during The Games. While she's trying to figure out what to do about her complicated relationship with Peeta and Gale, the 75th Games, the third Quarter Quell, are announced. This time - she knows - President Snow decided to change up the rules to punish her: Each district must draw the names of the participants from the pool of already existing victors. Katniss knows that she is one of them since she is the only woman from District 12 who has ever won the Games. But this time it isn't Peeta who will join her in the arena: it's her mentor Haymitch who won his Games 25 years ago.

Summary
