Maybe it wouldn’t be such a problem, he thinks, if he could just tell Lance the truth. Maybe, he thinks, then Lance would understand. And he wouldn’t get so pissed at him for almost accidentally killing himself once a week. Maybe it would be easier, if he could just be a little more honest with them both.
But the thing is, it’s not easy. If things were easy, Keith wouldn’t be out on the training deck every night until he’s so exhausted that he can’t see straight—until he reaches that point of fading out of focus just long enough for the gladiator to sweep his legs out from under him. And if things had an easy explanation, then he wouldn’t need Lance to patch him up in the hours where all of their friends are asleep. And he wouldn’t be bleeding. And he wouldn’t be hurting.
_Keith tries to navigate leadership and the messy concept of love in all of its forms—all while trying to keep the darkest, buried secrets from his past from bubbling back to the surface. It doesn’t go as well as you might expect.

Keith knows that Lance knows how important this alliance is. He knows how big the other group is on ceremony and how bad Keith admittedly is at the finer nuances of the political doublespeak. He knows because all of those are the reasons Keith chose Lance to be his fellow delegate and lead the alliance talks. And yet here Lance is, mocking their hosts by pointedly ignoring them in what Keith can only guess is a both a literal silent protest of the aliens’ blatant sexism and show of support for Allura. He understands, he feels the same, but this is not the time or place and the hurt he feels at the trust Lance has broken with his actions is more deafening than any silence.

Small things, quiet things, but truths to him nonetheless. He eventually worked up the courage to even part with his pelt, briefly, in training, or eating, or simply bonding. Found the strength to set the jacket out of arm’s reach.
Perhaps the choice was foolish.
Because now his second greatest fear has come true — he may not have lost his pelt, true, but he is now bonded in eternity with another. When Keith handed Lance his coat, he unknowingly claimed Lance, as a prize and as a mate.
A feat of fate and magic that cannot be undone.
