    Megatron sees a golden opportunity to get something valuable on his side, to drag the oh no noble and selfless Optimus Prime down to his side. And he's not going to let this opportunity slip away.

    Ratchet has seen a lot. He knows a lot. His time as a medic and his time in the war has left him with a wide range of information. Information allows him to read mechs and situations better than these new bots.

    …he knows Starscream is letting them live.
    ….he knows he is playing with them.
    ….the younger ones are laughing, cheering that they beat him. Ratchet has seen him take punches from Megatron and not even falter. That tiny pinch wouldn't do slag to him. He can see Starscream stand up behind the other, a wicked smile on his face.

    He just hopes Starscream's wavy ethics and moral code of not slaughtering children for no reason continues to hold up. (Starscream??? Morals??? What??? Shocking, I know.)

     

    Here's a 5 times Starscream fought the animated, and one time he saved them.
