When out from the stones hatch a pair of dragons, the brothers are pulled into the dangerous life of rogue Dragon Riders as they are hunted by the evil King Galbatorix and his terrifying servants. Taken in by storyteller Brom, they travel for the Varden, the resistance force fighting the empire.

    Eragon is barely 16, unprepared for the challenges ahead of them, and always getting into trouble. His dragon, Saphira, has her work cut out for her keeping him alive. But as their journey goes on, he finds his dreams plagued by a beautiful woman in terrible pain...a pain he must soon face himself.

    Murtagh is only just a man, worried that his younger brother is not ready for a life of war, and unsuspecting of his own origins. He and his dragon Thorn have plenty of things to keep an eye out for as their situation worsens. Though Murtagh thinks he understands the world, one of Galbatorix's hunters could shake everything he thought he knew.

    With the Varden just clinging on and their lives dangling by a thread, the brothers are in for the fight of their lives.

    When his erratic behavior and drinking problem get out of control, his dragon Thorn and his brother Eragon take him to see the Eldunari, who encourage him to face the horrors of his past in order to overcome his pain. With the help of Thorn and the Eldunari, he dives into the sea of memory and must wade through the hurt and torment to come out whole on the other side.

    (It’s a long, dark tunnel, but canon-compliant so there is light at the end I promise!)

    “Swear to me now, in the Ancient Language, that you will not use magic against me, or the Varden, or any of their allies, and that you will not attempt to escape us.”
    Eragon hardened his expression, knowing that Murtagh had to believe him, or it wouldn’t work. Murtagh had to believe that Eragon was willing to kill his dragon, or he’d call his bluff.
    And was it a bluff? Even Eragon wasn’t certain. Could he stand by and let Thorn die? He didn’t know, but he didn’t want to find out either.
    “Either you swear,” Eragon panted, his voice dead and unfeeling, “Or we let Thorn die. And then perhaps I’ll be kind, and kill you as well.”
    Murtagh thrashed again, a desperate cry emanating from his throat. He was wriggling like an animal in a trap, and tears joined the blood and dirt on his face. Eragon felt each heartbeat in his own chest, fear and pain twisting together.
    "Eragon, hurry," Arya interjected in his thoughts, "Thorn is fading."

    ...After destroying the gates at Dras Leona and wounding Thorn severely, Aren has enough energy left in it to pursue Murtagh and Thorn out into the plains and take them captive.
