Summary
Editing the summary because it didn't exactly explain what this is about. I wanted a story that considers if Christine's melancholia and fainting may be medical and takes seriously her belief in the supernatural as situated in real belief systems. Three months after the events of the opera, she and Raoul are caught in a criminal ransom scheme in Maderia, falling at the intersection of the collapse of the whaling industry and the "Great Game" of imperialism. Their rescue strands them in the wilderness, along with a family of strangers. The story is nonlinear and contains a lot of backstories, especially for Erik and Daroga. The story also retraces the events at the opera, transposing the angel of music story with a more ritual magik based view of angels. What if the angel of music was also the a real, ceremonial invocation?
Canon divergent backstory, slightly. Racial themes.

Summary
Christine Daaé was a lonely, angry young woman dealing with grief and disappointment. But one day in the Palais Garnier dressing rooms she heard a voice sing to her that helped with everything. This follows the story roughly as Leroux gave it to us, but with one key difference; what if our Phantom was a woman?
This is a Leroux-mostly-based retelling, everyone else's genders are staying the same, just Erik is now Esme, and we'll see how that changes things in this universe. This is an experiment.

Summary
Erik makes a discovery about Christine, and then they are interrupted while indulging it. What follows is a meeting that forces Erik to confront himself in unpleasant ways, makes Christine understand some of Erik's past experiences more intimately than he'd like, and so many layers of borrowed identities that even Erik gets confused at times about who he is. There is sex, there is violence, there is a black bird on a kitchen floor, and a trip to Belgium. There are also masks, and Erik wears more than one.
This is the first story of a set of three. This was inspired by Flora_Gray's "The Better Man," at an early point in that story. After this story, it takes a sharp turn into the Elsewhere, and after that, things will change even more.
