An invitation of Dankovsky’s to a gala celebrating the triumphs of modern medicine (and his new work recalling the common fight against the pest) makes its way to Town-on-Gorkhon. Him and Burakh quite missed each other.

His main motivation driving his goals before had been the hope for academic accolades, a vision of an idealized future in which anyone could control and contort their own fate. He thought nothing could shake or deter him from that goal. In a laughably short time, he’d learned of his folly. Any hopes had been beaten out of him with every numerous failure, and Death pulled no punches in attempting to acquaint him with humility.
But now? Now he stands from a desk cluttered with smuggled books and borrowed notes not out of dispassionate erudite interest, nor a noble yet ultimately naive intention. It is visceral. It is personal. He moves to the table with purpose in every movement, a passion stirring in his chest so bright and burning it threatens to consume him, and he will let it. It is not a question of if he can, nor of if he should. It is not a question at all- he is going to steal Artemy back from Death’s clutches, or join him in the attempt. Exercitatio potest omnia.
