Deacon is hurting after the events of the Switchboard, but he isn't particularly good at dealing with his feelings. When Tinker Tom's equipment detects an Institute broadcast aimed at Vault 111 and P.A.M.'s statistical analysis indicates that it should be investigated as soon as the Railroad is able given their current state of chaos, Deacon immediately volunteers. Anything to get out of HQ. He isn't expecting much. Vault 111 is generally considered to be a dead Vault, so he's surprised when he arrives in Sanctuary Hills just in time to witness the Sole Survivor enter the Brave New World for the first time. He doesn't know it yet, but he's about to meet the woman who would become the best damn partner he's ever had.

After the bombs fell, children became a precious rarity. The radiation left many women, even those who didn't become ghouls, unable to even get pregnant. Those that were able to had a whole new hosts of challenges to face. Lack of food, safe drinking water, and proper medical equipment meant that many pregnancies ended in tragedy. Even the act of being born was deadly in the Wasteland.

Summary

Hawke was tossed into the air like a ragdoll and hit the water like a brick, the force of the impact not quite knocking him out, leaving him with enough consciousness to feel the cold pressing in on him, his limp body sinking, deeper, deeper, his lungs aching as they drew in fluid, but not enough to do anything about it.
For a moment, there was a loud rushing, crackling noise and the impression of light against his closed eyelids.
And then there was nothing. Not darkness, no end of the tunnel to stumble into, just… nothing. That unquantifiable void of nonexistence which looms in the distance your whole life.
Harlowe sucked in a sharp lungful of air, and suddenly there was something again.

Summary
Arthur Maxson and River Danse have both devoted the entirety of their lives to the Brotherhood of Steel, leaving little room for anything else—apart from the deep friendship and unspoken attraction they share. That is, until one potent moment shatters all that they have, leaving their relationship in smoldering ruins, throwing their beliefs and loyalties into question. Out of the ashes, something new arises. They don't want to want each other, but they do. They want to let go, but they can't. The very proximity of one to the other is sacrilege, is sin, is the blatant rejection of everything he purports to believe in. The acceptance of one into the other's life is acceptance of the potential for more pain, more loss on top of what he's already endured at the hands of the same man.
