The water sprite sways closer to Frenchie. “You fell in me. You’re covered in me. It’s enough.”
“Enough for what?” Frenchie leans back, his eyes darting all over the sprite and over to Roach. He keeps his head lifted, trying not to show how nervous he is.
“To turn you into a monster over the next day and night. Enough time for you to fetch your friend. Enough time to repay me.” The sprite sways over to Roach. “If the payment is fair, I will undo my curse on your friend.”
Roach takes Frenchie out for a spa day like he did with Fang, but whoops! The water sprite of the stream they visit is still annoyed at their lack of gratitude. Roach and Frenchie better bring back Fang and make amends, or Frenchie is stuck with his curse forever...

Summary
“Fang?” Roach called out, walking down the deck, the empty tankard falling to the deck behind him.
“Roach! Are the invaders gone?”
“Yeah! The party’s back on. Can’t you hear it?”
“Haul me up!”
Roach was already pulling the dinghy up. It didn’t take long, since it was just stowed over the side. Once Fang was standing solidly on the deck, he put the goat down and let her toddle off. Roach was smiling down at the little thing when strong hands took him by the cheeks and pulled him into a kiss.
“Mmm!” he squealed, surprised.
“Oh no!” Fang gasped, pulling back. “Is that bad? I should’ve asked.”
“No, no. Fang, it is okay,” Roach assured him, laughing off the awkwardness. He hoped he hadn’t ruined it with his skittishness. “You just surprised me, is all. Try again?”
“Oh,” the old salt replied, his cheeks darkened with a flush that was still discernible in the colorful glow of the party lights.
This kiss was much more gentle, so soft it almost hurt. When they paused, it was hard to say who was smiling wider. Fang giggled. Roach laughed too, infected by it.

Summary
1718. The crew think Roach has gone mad. He keeps telling them that Izzy Hands is still alive, somewhere in the back of his mind.
1818. Izzy makes toys for the children in town. The local woodcutter brings him wood, and although the townsfolk say he's crazy, Izzy finds that he doesn't really mind his company.
1918. Israel Hands comes home from the war missing a leg, and meets a particularly enthusiastic prosthetist he finds himself inexplicably drawn to.
2018. Roach moves into a dilapidated seaside cabin said to be haunted by the ghost of an old pirate. The tired old fisherman knocking on his door does look strangely familiar, but he can't quite put his finger on why. Nor do they understand why the two of them keep having vivid dreams about being buried in the ground, or why Izzy keeps wandering towards the sea in his sleep.
Perhaps this is the year they figure it out.

“Hey, Iz,” Edward says, “Roach and them are here.”
The bare foot remains limp and pale where it hangs. Ed notices it and reaches across the hammock to lift it and move it back inside.
Hands doesn’t make a sound.“He’s not feelin’ great,” Ed says. “Tuckered himself out on deck.”
Roach imagines Hands slamming open the brig grate with both guns blazing and his crutch barely clinging to his armpit.
Yeah, he supposes a mutiny’s a big day for most people.
(Roach watches Ed and Izzy put down a mutiny on The Queen Anne's Revenge and along the way comes to understand just how unhealthy they're trying not to be.)

Charon held out a long, knobby arm, their fist closed around something. Roach reached forward with both palms outstretched below Charon’s downturned palm. They opened their hand and a bright yellow sphere fell into Roach’s cupped hands. It was warm where it cushioned into his skin, but then bounced up again and stayed hovering just above where he held it, radiating golden light. Roach had never seen anything like it.
This is the Everlight, Charon told him. It holds hope within it, and it is everything you will need to complete your work in this place. Hope is a flame, the light that never falters, the beacon of eternity.
Roach swallowed, staring at the Everlight with wonder.
“Where do I start?”
Or, Roach finds employment in the afterlife taking over for Charon. The souls he comes across are people he knew in life, and seeing each one again has its blessings and its pains. No matter what, he must do whatever they ask to help them move on from the world forever. Even his beloved Izzy Hands.

It happened sometimes, just the way of things, but the Witcher was sorry for it all the same. Had she lived as a farmer’s mare instead of his, Roach could have grown old teaching chubby grandchildren to ride, fed mounds of sugar from their small palms. Instead, the Witcher listened to her guts go still and silent as he rubbed soothing circles under her blonde forelock.
