Seeing the words laid out like that so bluntly makes his heart ache. He finds peace in the art of crocheting: making things with his hands and sharing them with those he loves. From the adults who became the parental figures he never really had, to the kids who thrust themselves into his life and will likely never leave, along with the gang of misfits he calls his friends. Especially the one who is unexpectedly stealing his heart. With each new crocheting project, Steve shows his love for them in all the ways he knows how and slowly learns how to receive it in return.

"Jane," El said quietly but with a smile as she looked at Steve.
"She goes by El. It's a nickname they gave her," He pointed at the boys. "El Harrington. This is Billy, he goes to my school."

Mike has a family, and he's scared. He has no one to be with and no help in the arena... or so he thought.
"I'm fucked up" said Dustin when he heard his name get called in the reaping. This is one of the things you don't actually sense as real until it's your turn to experience them.
Max has trained her whole life to be a tribute, but she never wanted to volunteer. She didn't think any of this was right but, when she got chosen, she didn't feel too bad. She would win. Even if it meant killing the other tribute who, conviniently, was her brother Billy.
Nancy was a role model. Good grades, good life, good person. But she stopped wanting to be that when her name got called in the reping. She knew, from now on, she was going to fight.
