Summary
Vash does a good job of pretending to be human. Not that he’s trying to pretend. Vash is probably the most genuine and peace-loving idiot amongst humanity on this shitty planet and he shows more emotion than half of the people they come across. And continues to do so despite all the scars and shit he’s been through. It can be hard to see past the mask if you aren’t around him long enough—probably a reason why Vash doesn’t hang around a town for too long.
Hiding on the other hand, Wolfwood can assume Vash does not want his inhumanity to be known, which is something can Wolfwood emphasizes, having his own past demons. It became an unspoken rule to Wolfwood to not talk or think about Vash’s inhumanity and also pretend Vash was more human than Plant.
Wolfwood didn’t think one of the many hidden Plant abilities would include this of all things.

Summary
For as long as he can remember, Knives has had a voice in the back of his head. It never says anything. When he’d told Rem about it, her face had crumbled. Like she knew something he didn’t. It’s the first time he’d seen that kind of expression on her face, so he listens when she tells him not to say a word about it to anyone else.
Sometimes the voice quiets so much that he thinks it’s disappeared. But it always comes back. He’s gotten so used to it that it’s just background noise to him, a buzzing in the back of his head that he can easily ignore.
And it’s always crying.
When the crew finds a pair of independent plants, Rem is only allowed to take one of the twins to raise as her own.

This wasn’t exactly “laying low,” but in Vash’s defense… he was bored.
“You do this a lot?” Vash asked, examining his face now that he could fully see him, no matter how shitty the fluorescents overhead were. His face looked older up close, there were bags under his eyes and a hint of a wrinkle forming between his brows that must have formed after years of furrowing his brows. His nose was strong and crooked, and there was a cut there that hadn’t fully healed yet. There was stubble along his chiseled jaw that Vash couldn’t resist but run his fingers along.
“Nah, I’m usually the one that needs patched up,” he said matter-of-factly, cleaning the wound itself now with one hand on the back of his head to hold him still. “Unless you’re talking about bringing people home, then yeah. Hold still now,” he murmured the last part, taking extra care as he applied the small butterfly bandages to his temple. “There. Good as new.” Wolfwood surveyed his handiwork with a smile, and set his hands on Vash’s thighs.

Vash has a nasty run-in with a stranger from the bar. Wolfwood saves the day and takes him home.
