There haven’t been any airbenders either, not in a hundred years, when Sozin’s Comet kinda kickstarted the war.”

He has that feral cat look he sometimes gets, haunches raised and eyes uncertain. Like an animal being backed up into a corner, ready to sprint away at any moment. Katara tries to ease his nerves with a smile.
“Yes, heat helps with the cramps.” She confirms.
“So, I could help.” He holds up his hand, waving it around slightly, expression still unsure and Katara finally realizes what he’s offering.
“Oh,” She blinks, “You don’t have to if you don’t want to, I wouldn’t—”
“I want to.” He interrupts, “I offered after all.”

When Zuko accidentally kidnaps the wrong member of the Gaang, he's surprised how easy it is to forget he's supposed to be hunting them down. Katara is pissed off, Zuko just wants to get to Ba Sing Se without getting impaled, and their friendship is just a side story - until it isn't.
Enemies to allies. Allies to friends. Friends to something more.

Summary
A rewrite of Avatar; The Last Airbender.
Banished and burned, Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation is told the only way to return to his home, to restore his honour, was to find the Avatar.
Three years later, Zuko was training when he discovers something which shakes him to his core. That the Avatar was closer then he thought.
With this discovery what he must do as the Fire Nation Prince conflicts with his duty as the Avatar. It is said that blood runs thicker then water, but with his eyes closed he can't tell the difference.

This is a rewrite where Zuko is the Avatar, Aang still survives the genocide by running away and getting stuck in an iceberg, everything happens chronologically to the show (episodes are still in line with the show, no jumbling them around) and how things are different (somewhat)- Words:

Since the question has come up so often in the comments, yes, Aang is exactly as he is supposed to be and the reason is not Aang-bashing. Also, there is no definite chapter count because I like the freedom to let the characters explore their challenges and they always take longer than I thought. The plot in itself is set.-

There was never any other note, no words from the Fire Lord, just a piece of paper with the name, age, and rank of the soldier who died. Zuko had kept every single one on his ship, reading over every single one and committing their names to his memory. He couldn’t stop them from dying, but they were what motivated him to keep moving, to get back his honor so that he could help prevent deaths like theirs.
