Zuko nervously digs his keys out of his pocket and starts fumbling at the mailboxes. And he is fumbling. It’s like his fingers aren’t working properly, and he can’t get the key into the slot. It’s the most mundane thing, and Sokka can’t remember the last time he felt so scared.“Let me help,” Sokka says, because he can’t say "what’s wrong with you?"
Something’s wrong, something is very wrong, and it’s making Sokka crazy, not being able to pinpoint what it is. It makes him feel like he has to cut the right wires before a bomb goes off, except the bomb is Zuko going back upstairs again.
Zuko pushes his hair behind his ears, nervously, and Sokka follows the gesture until he’s looking at Zuko’s face. Zuko, who is always un-fussed-with and unkempt, is wearing makeup. It’s pasty, slightly darker than the tone of his skin, and it trails across his right temple like the tail of a falling star.
“Your head,” Sokka says.
Zuko looks at him.
“My…?”

After all, he'd chased them around the world, found them in Ba Sing Se (on accident really), and ended up helping his sister almost end the existence of the Avatar itself. So...his chances really hadn't been that great in the first place. Honestly, why he'd thought it'd be easy, he really wasn't sure. Another bad idea to throw on the pile of Zuko's past. But hey, it wasn't all bad. He's...different now, at the very least. Now he just has to hope that means he's better too.

Zuko realizes his destiny much earlier. As in, as soon as he wakes up in the palace after his Agni Kai and is told he is banished. Unfortunately, he's never been a patient one. So he storms right up to Ozai and tells him what he's going to do. And gets locked up for over three years. Then, one day, he's being pulled out and told he's the new Fire Lord.
A "Zuko never meets the Gaang and suddenly becomes Fire Lord after three years of literal torture" AU. In which the Gaang doesn't know what to think of the new Fire Lord who happens to be the missing nephew of Aang's firebending teacher, Iroh constantly has a headache, and, sure, maybe the world hates the Fire Nation, but the Fire Nation LOVES Zuko, and he can work with that.
