Out of everyone in the Decay of Angels organization, all of them had called in sick once or twice.
Sigma after taking care of the sky casino calls in after a stressful week, Bram had somehow gotten a cold or food poisoning from modern day foods, Fukuchi has gotten injured on past missions, and Fyodor with his chronic anemia.
Everyone has called in sick. Except for Nikolai.
So everyone is a bit surprised when Nikolai is not present for their monthly meeting. They expect Nikolai's first sick day to last only a day.
But three days!?

“You’re awake,” Chuuya said, stopping at Dazai’s bedside. A small, strained smile began to play on his lips, but he looked like he was trying not to grit his teeth. “It’s been a bit. They said your coma could’ve lasted a long time, maybe months or more, considering what happened. But they also said it helps for the person unconscious to hear someone talking to them because it might wake them up sooner.”
“Awake?” Dazai echoed, his eyes darting from Chuuya’s face to the faraway wall, taking in everything again. This was a hospital. He was being kept alive. How did he survive? “That’s impossible, I had everything calculated down to the moment. From the height I fell from, I shouldn’t have survived.” His voice rose in a panic and a finger came upon his lips, gently shushing him.
“Not so loud. The walls are thinner than you think.” Chuuya leaned over to get a good look at Dazai’s face, his smile widening. It was unsettling, like he was peering into Dazai’s soul. Something was wrong. “You’re right, Dazai. You’re supposed to be dead to everyone who knows what happened. That’s why you can’t be loud.”
Beast Dazai survives his fall, but his actions still have their consequences.

He began talking, but Fyodor was nodding along in an automatic way, focusing instead of his words on the way Nikolai didn’t look at him in the eyes even once, and on the almost unnoticeable tremor of his hand.
It wasn’t worry or any form of attachment, it was for a perfectly logic reason. Nikolai was a valuable pawn for him, if he broke the plan would have been put at risk."
Or, Fyodor notices the dark, bloody shadow casted upon Nikolai, a mental shadow born from his past that would start haunting him when something triggered memories that should never have been brought to life. Or maybe, it had always been there, and Nikolai is a pretender way better than anyone ever thought.

Summary
Nikolais lowly love affair turned secret marriage with Dazai was a mistake. He knew that.
Dazai and his relationship with Nikolai..an odviously spy for the Decay of Angels was a sickening mess he couldn't even recall when it exactly started and the fact it would kill one of them for it too end.
Sigmas guilt, stress about Nikolai and loss was eating at him quicker and harder. It would only take a small push.
Fyodors control grip on Nikolai was faulting and he had to do something about that. Even if others got in the way.
