“Unfortunately,” Dazai laments, sighing dramatically. “You just got away with ‘science nerd’ and ‘soccer player,’ but I’m supposed to be an artist! I hate art! It’s useless!”
“Shut the fuck up. That’s not the problem here. You? A ‘zest for life?’ Looking forward to each new morning? Hah! Rimbaud would sooner come back to life.”
Dazai turns to Chuuya with the barest facsimile of a smile painted over his lips.
“I,” he says sweetly, “am going to gut you open like a fish.”
Dazai and Chuuya are seasoned mafiosos at the ripe old age of almost-seventeen. They’ve fought gang wars, interrogated prisoners, and done all manner of unspeakable things. Now, they face their greatest challenge yet: going (undercover) to a real high school. With regular teens (who may or may not be desperately trying to get them to kiss).

Summary
Thing is, they had already established this from the beginning. Dazai did not want any long term or committed relationship. He told him this, the very first time they became intimate. Chuuya remembered it clearly because he was so shocked at the honesty he displayed for him that day. He told him that he had no right to let someone become so invested in him when his life is constantly in jeopardy, by his own hands and by other enemy affiliations. In the beginning, when he did break it down to him it wasn’t that much of a big deal, logically it made sense to him. Plus, in Chuuya’s mind, he was just lusting after him, the bickering they do was enough to convince himself he couldn’t ever get wrapped in the man. But here he was, literally on the verge of tears because of how much he was head over heels in love.

It took Chuuya approximately two hours to calm down enough to head home. Two hours of walking the streets of Yokohama. Two hours of trying to make sense of the stupid fight they had (because it was. It was so stupid looking back on it. Dazai said something flippant, Chuuya took offense, they argued, Dazai off-handedly said that maybe he should move out, Chuuya panicked and yelled at him and then ended up leaving first). Two hours before he realized he hadn't told Dazai he was coming back.
Or: There are still things about each other that Dazai and Chuuya don't know, and learning them isn't always an easy feat.
