good and the paradoxes are interesting to think abt
to anyone coming across my note-to-self by chance, this contains MAJOR SPOILERS and mind boggling meta
current timeline hua cheng will still be dead.. and i guess this hua cheng is the past hua cheng who can be alive in the current timeline after xie lian writes that letter because the letter saves him, but only the past hua cheng.. so unlike the paradox that assumes that the past can't rewrite itself because if that were the case the present would be different (and hua cheng wouldn't have died), instead it assumes that the person from the past is a different past, functioning similar to the mailbox itself, and that time is a volatile thing, capable of warping past and present in a controlled way. which is even more interesting because at the wedding, hua cheng knows about the letters, so there's actually a universe where they still exchange letters, but he doesn't get saved. one could argue that the present does rewrite itself because the ending is left open to interpretation, however the counter-argument for that is that in that case, hua cheng from the past would've existed and lived in the house at the same time as present xie lian. so the way for this to work is that hua cheng from the past gets the happy ending, but even the mailbox can't save them in all universes.. perhaps this works when one considers physics and electronics. this exists at a metastable point where it could be a 1 or 0, with that metastable point being if hua cheng sees xie lian's latest letter in time, contributed by multiple micro factors such as xie lian seeing the painting, hua cheng lingering at the house, etc etc. kinda bittersweet, but I'll consider it happy.. damn that's rlly interesting

As if on cue, the silver chain snapped for no reason whatsoever. Xie Lian startled and attempted to catch it as it fell, but a burst of bad luck ensured that it slipped through his fingers and went tumbling merrily down the slope. Catch me, come catch me, the ring winked in the sunlight.
Naturally, Xie Lian attempted to do so. Naturally, he stubbed his toe on a root, toppled over, and rolled down the hill in hot, uncontrollable pursuit of the ring.
For a ghost, giving your ashes to a loved one is a high-risk decision. Giving your ashes to the God of Disaster is a tremendously high-risk decision.
Hua Cheng is the most qualified being to make that decision. And, as Xie Lian discovers, a Ghost King does not do take-backsies.
