Summary
It’d only been an hour, maybe two, since he’d slipped away upstairs. He’d assumed the others had found their own places to fall since their tadpoles had finally ceased their blurry reaching and, by extension, begun to afford him some amount of peace.
So a knock is quite unwelcome. Doubly-so when he already knows who it is on the other side of the door.
Gale fumbles, falls into bed next to him, still sweet with the smell of brandy and magic.
“Astarion, is that you?” He whispers, groping in the dark until his fingers catch in the ruffle of his shirt. “Are you awake at this late hour, my very….” His head lolls against Astarion’s shoulder, and he smothers a laugh in advance of his own joke. “Elven, vampiric friend?”

Summary
Every time, the tadpole squirms its way inside his head. Every time he is ‘saved,’ ‘seduced,’ and sometimes even believes it. This time feels almost real, different, as he drives the blade between Cazador’s ribs.
Astarion watches for the hundredth time as the people he has come to know unravel. Wyll loses self or sire, Karlach’s heart always burns too bright. Gale fakes a smile before he goes, insists it’s for the best.
He would have thought that he would be numb to the hurt by now, but still, it’s hard to watch.

Summary
He remembers the blood running into Tav’s eyes. It was beautiful, even after he realized what he’d done. One drop trailed all the way to the corner of his mouth. It moved in soft, endless shapes: you still with me, Astarion?
“So you just knew to find me,” he says dully, not bothering to make it a question. “Like one of those drab little pigeons.”
Astarion's day leaves him a little raw, and needling at Tav—in more ways than one—turns the aftermath into more than he bargained for.

Summary
Gale tried again. “I—yes,” he said, finally. “This might be my last night alive. You’re right.”
“I’m not right,” sniffed Astarion. “I don't approve of the idea. I’m onto you. There’s a difference.”
The night before they reach Moonrise Towers, Gale's simulacrum fetches Astarion from his tent. He doesn't come quietly.
